  • Well, I read some good titles on the subject:
“The Art & Science of Digital Compositing” by Ron Brinkman, it’s from 1997 or something but still OK and written from (nothing real) Shake
and node-based compositing point of view, but the “scince” part is the same.
“Digital Compositing for Film and Video” by Steve Wright is a bit more complicated and mathematical (hazardous for creatives)
and it’s elaborates on some of the everyday tasks: Transfer modes, mattes and keying, color corrections etc.
“Color Correction for Digital Video” is also a fine piece of work, it taught me to a lot on CC, especially the part about reading
    obscure vectroscopes.

    hope this helps,

    cheers

“…hanna barberra cartoons you know which rocks are going to fall, becasue while the rest look nice, 3 of them are more drawn.”

This is one of the best and well put cartoon notions I’ve heard in years.

  • Well… if it all goes good with the practice, I might end up doing the project in AVID.
The files run OK, export OK, and they were converted to those foul-named OMFI files.

What I meant by “safe” is that hopefully I won’t have to capture anything again ..

by the way -after 2 days with avid I really appriciate FCP’s ability to SELECT a clip in
timeline hassle free (not to mention that “lost in space” feeling I have with that ugly avid timeline)

  • Well I know what you mean by “artifacts”, I had this in a footage where I really pushed hard
on the shadows, I got those ugly blocks all over the place.

I find SA Color Finesse to be a very useful color corrector. plus you have a lot of different tools
    that FCP lacks (curves)
It comes free with After Effects 6.5 and they also have a version for FCP.

I had this weird thing happen couple of times,
usually working on BIG projects with a lot of comps inside.
When I quit and restarted AE I could work again to some extent.

    Or try Purge (edit menu).
I’m on a mac, doesn’t know if it makes a differnet.

Best of all – work with a Monitor so you can see what gets chopped (if so ..)

    OK There Goes ..
Create your main comp in a bigger size than requested (i.e square – because you’re gonna rotate it
and don’t want the background showing)
Place the video of the Skyline in that comp.
Now, you have to create the illustrated skyline.
Either do this in illustrator (place a psd capture of the vid and draw it)
or draw the skyline using solid and masks in shapes of the buildings.

So now you have a vector image which you can zoom in any scale you like, it will still be crisp.
Now for the 2 bars – I’d place 2 masks on a black solid that will be on top of the buildings.
now you can either the composition, while enlarging the masks for the bars.

put the whole thing in a TV sized comp and fune tune it.

I’d do this in AE 3D (for a nicer camera move, maybe place the buildings at different z-depths)
but even remaining in 2D can look OK

    Hope this helped.

No Windows boxes around here, Steve.
But as said above, I’ll probably just keep using Cleaner for WMV exports.

    thanks anyway.
