  • Yes I agree with all You said,but..how do you operate the camera which has got no real lens controls.
Recently myself and other cameramen tried to “operate” HDV camera.
While it is OK to shoot wide and from the tripod, you really can not control camera-lens when you want to do some really creative shots.
For cheap docos and corporates it is ok.
I understand the main reason peaple are talking about those video cameras(like sony hdv) is,they are affordable and picture looks ok.
I will buy one as a second camera for some different shots, but not as my main one.It is sad to see 80% of so called docos on National Geography so badly shot and edited, they look like family holiday movies.
Industry has got itself to blame for that.No mechanic can become a doctor unless they have a uni degree, yet ANYBODY can become “director or cameraman”.
Offcourse picture from Panasonic,JVC or Sony small cameras will look OK.
But they will never match quality of picture from big guns, especially if you have real pros standing behind them.
    Take care all.

Once sony and others will “plugin” decent 2/3″ block to format like HDV,it will be hard to beat this kind of gear.
Lets consider new JVC-7000 gear with CMOS 2/3′ block and 12-14 bit processing and compressed HD recorder at the back.
Let me tell you,any DVCPRO 50 gear will not stand a chance.
(but it will be still too good for todays rates:)

[Noah Kadner] “Yeah Jiri- sounds like you got a nothing special upconvert.”
    Really??
Well tell Thomson,Sony,Ikegami and Panasonic to stop producing HD gear.
Or just shoot the same shots on different cameras and compare it(after upconversion) on HD monitor….or better still, post Your visions on HD forum
    for members to be entertained:)

My friend shot the whole series on 910(which I own as well).
It was upconverted onto HD on expansive upconverter.
It looks OK,but it is no HD-true HD.
It is like “upconverting” S-VHS to SP.
    It just LOOKS OK.

[beak] “If this camera looks as good as the 900 then I’m not worried about uprezing to HD.”

    I would.
Any problem in SD looks 4 times bigger in HD.
It is like “blow up” from 16mm to 35mm.
Any problems with pixels in SD will be much more visible in HD.
Bottom line is:if someone wonts real HD picture, they will have to shoot HD,
    no short cuts….

  • [NICK B] “At the London Production show one stand had the full range of Sony Camera’s looking at the same scene i felt the Z1 looked better than the new DV450 infact the Z1 looked better than digibeta !”

I did tests on Z1 compared to DVCPRO910.
I find your statement hard to believe.

  • Steve,
I own Panasonic and Thomson cameras.
I am aware of Pnasonic HD cameras….as good as they are, there are others, mainly Ikegami and Thomson and perhaps Sony who are the even better.
To sell camera like Varicam with 10 bit processing and 1mil block in 2005 is a bit of dissapoitment.
I am very impressed with Panasonic HD format…it looks good and it is affordable.
By the way, what kind of block will your new small HD 200 camcorder have??
    Will it be CMOS??
    regards-jiri
