DVX200 Questions- DVX and SD
Posted by Les Howarth on May 30, 2005 at 4:04 pmWill the DVX200 use the full image sensor for SD shooting or will it “crop down” to a lesser area (and therefore a narrower angle of view).
or- Will it be possible to shoot HD (to a hardrive or P2) and a simutaneously record SD to the internal DV tape?
Similarly if shooting to DVCPRO50 SD would it be possible to record to the internal tape (as plain DV) for “insurance”?

Full sensor.
[les howarth] “or- Will it be possible to shoot HD (to a hardrive or P2) and a simutaneously record SD to the internal DV tape? “
No it is a choice of one or the other, because the camera would have to be running two codecs.

No the internal tape drive can only record DV, and DVCPRO50 is a different codec, as in less compression and 4:2:2, so for the same answer as the one above it cannot happen.
Hope that helps,

Thanks for the response. Can the camera “downconvert” to DV (miniDV) from DVCPRO, DVCPRO 50, or DVCPRO HD on the P2 cards in a VTR mode?

Yes the camera can do that.
Best,

June 1, 2005 at 12:07 pmThanks for the info Jan ( remember you from back on the DVL back in the dark ages of DV ),
The use full sensor is good news as the cam has a usefully wider than usual on such a cam and irc the “other guys” tend to crop into the sensor for SD. The option of doing greenscreen and FX work in better colourspace with DVCPro50 or HD is very attractive too.
I would most likely be using as SD initially then going 720p…and since I am still using aging VX1000’s it is definately getting to replacement time and this sounds close to ideal as I prefer the formfactor to a “shouldercam” (as I never_ever shoot that way).
I confess the JVC looks neat too, but I do worry about going to 19mbit Intraframe MPEG2 it still means that even keyframes must be more compressed than DV (assuming 720p).
Of course, both cams have yet to make their appearance- but the Pana still looks like a favourite for me.

June 2, 2005 at 12:32 amThanks Jan! This is really good news for many of us. A lot of clients will still want to have a miniDV tape handed to them at the end of a shoot (or shortly thereafter) and have gotten used to this practice over the past few years. Until we can get them out of this habit (even though this will not be the source material or source codec for the edit) at least we can hand them a tape that will somehow make them confident and go home happy.
