I saw the “model” at SMPTE 05.
I was also talking about it with Japanese engineer.
So since You did not answer my question about CCD in camera month ago,I can unofficially say Pana 200 will have 1.2mega pixel block. It will not be CMOS.
That said, lets wait, perhaps this Japanese gentleman was giving me some real information.

I do not want to pick up any fight here.I was sitting around with other
    cameramen.Everyone liked Pana 200 camera…except for one thing-LENS.
So Jan,if You want to sell twice as many units, give it a lens it deserves.
Just simple piece of glas like on JVC.Basic Lens on JVC is cheap.
Lens one can swap for another one.

[Graeme Nattress] “That means you can put a real follow focus on a Panasonic and it will work, whereas you can’t with a Sony. I just got a nice lens on a Canon 20D, and it works similarly. You turn it, and it works just like a real manual focus until you reach the end of the lens’ movement, and then it just keeps turning, but within it’s range, it works and feels just like a manual focus.”

Why would You design the lens like that for Video Camera??
What kind of benefit do You see in this??
Why is not Panasonic or Sony or Thomson or Ikegami or …………using this kind of “superior” technology??
I am amazed to hear this from forum leader.
What You are saying is stupid and I really mean this.
Using and designing lenses like that is not usual in Video or Film.
    Sorry for my outburst.

It is only 1/2′ camcorder at the moment comming next year.
XDCAM HD is highly compressed HD.

    OK here it comes.
What do cameramen expect from lens apart from glass, coatings and good mechanism is a Manual Lens Controls.
If You look at Sony Z1 or Pana200,it is very hard to manually focus and it is difficul to quickly change the exposure…on the other hand this new basic Fujinon lens for new JVC HD100 does it all.
I talked to Canon people at SMPTE 05 in Sydney and was told they would have 2 similar lenses for their new canon XL-3 camera.
My advice would be to buy JVC hd100-in Australia they sold the first shipment of 90.
    I hope it helps.

[Blub] “What is the problem with the Panasonic 200 lens?”
Well have a look at Fujinon and Canon range of HD lenses and You might get some idea.I gues You have not used such lenses before..

[Blub] “As I understand it Panasonic has other P2 cameras for sale right now, notice how little action there is on this forum…whither P2 indeed.”
    Money,money..

[NICK B] “The mistake is to see the camera as a $6000 camera and P2 costing $4000, you should view it as a $10k P2 High def camera, now that is cheap !

There is a big market for this camera but only for people who charge proper rates for the job sorry but if you cannot make a $10k camera pay for itself over 2yrs then your in the wrong business.”

Yeah this is true,I just wish Panasonic will compliment this camera with the lens like on JVC 100 which I saw at SMPTE 05 in Sydney only a few days ago.But after talking to Panasonic engineer,I think this will not happen…and it is a real pity.
JVC 100 was a great hit Down Under. It is ergonomicly designed by cameramen,
has got good basic glass in front of it and it just feels great on shoulder. It is cheap to shoot with.Tape is cheap.Sure it is not HD like
Pana 200,but I can see lots of people running with it.
Pana 200 will be bought by lesser amount of people…lens is the big disadvantage here….and Sony Z1,well it is an overpriced camera today.
I like the idea behind Panasonic 200,I just wish they will use some decent lens as well to make it work.

  • [toke lahti] “Next step forward would be cheap 1/2″ 1-chipper with changeable lens.”
One of the best cameras 15 years ago was BTS with 1/2′ block.
The only problem was, there was not enough 1/2′ lenses that time.
…but you can always tell the difference between 1/2 and 2/3′ block.
1/2′ camera is also less forgiving in critical situations.
