October 3, 2005 at 12:24 am in reply to: Panasonic commitment to P2?[ShawnMitchL] ” I am wondering what anyone might think/know about Panasonic’s commitment to P2 will be and when is a realistic time frame for 64GB media?”
Panasonic brochure says middle of 2007.

[tony salgado] “In which case the nearest available PA who last week was working at the slurpee counter at 7/11 will instantly be promoted to P2 dubbing expert.”
Ha Ha…lets create more jobs Tony…before they all go to China.

[donatello] “you bring up a excellent point “workflow ” !!!!
i never thought about that before as it’s never been my problem ..
the panasonic is a different workflow that at the moment NOBODY has answers ?? what do you hand the client at the end of the day ?
especially if it’s long documentary type where you interviews several persons for 30-1 hrs each = 5-6 hrs at end of day = you don’t have tiem to sit down and delete sections … so i would say choosing the panasonic one had better think about workflow !!! with HDV you just hand client the tape and there is no need to think about workflow …so is panasonic making the cinematographer have to come up with the post workflow for the producer ?? forget it .. if you shoot film you hand producer the film stock at end of day = they know the workflow … you shoot tape again you hand producer the tape = they know the workflow … so what do i do with P2 cards at end of day = transfer to hard drive ? DVD ? DLT tape = since when is workflow the cinematograhers problem ??”
Usually after 3-4 day shoot,You we have about 2-4 hours of material.
I can not see problem with P2 here,You hand them portable harddrive.
Better real 720p HD then dodgy HDV tape.
After all, documentaries are to be enjoyed.
It all comes to quality and BUDGET.
Speking of workflow-with P2 it is so much faster to check image and to edit as well. Why do You think Thomson are heading towards this path??
HDV is great value for money format for productions with next to zero
budget. If P2 card cost $4, we would not have this “talk” at all.
It is not fair to compare HDV camcorders to Pana200.
Pana200 will always stand out from HDV crowd,it is a different animal.

[Graeme Nattress] “That’s a rather blanket statement about lenses that I don’t think holds up, especially with the issues with the stock lens on the JVC. Not that the fixed lens on the Sony looks that much better.”
I and my friend have tested JVC100 and Sony Z1 by side.
Personally I will rather use JVC standard lens anytime.

“https://www.videosystems.com/e-newsletters/HD_Disc_Contenders092205/I think this would probably do rather a nice job!”
Steve,
I think it is great for archiving, but P2 or some sort of Sony Memory Stick will be better, smaller.I imagine within 2 years we will see P2 cards with about 64Gig capacity.
Because camcorders no longer require moving parts video recorders, cost of camcorders using memory stick will go down as well.
2 years ago my DVCPRO Panasonic 910 cost me about $25,000,today Panasonic 700 can do more and it costs only about $13,000 plus P2 memory.
What prohibits it at the moment is the COST of P2 memory…but it will change soon.
I think Sony are making grave mistake if they choose any kind of Disk recording for their camcorders.Sony have always being great inovators, now is time for them to introduce their version of P2.Just imagine if P2 stick would cost $4 per one.
Everyone would be happy.
Who would believe 2 years ago, that under $6,000 one could purchase true HD camcorder soon??
This is all meant as a friendly discussion about video recording options.

I think the most effective archiving could be DVD blue and HD DVD.
You could store up to 30gig onto one disk.
I guess this could be cost effective as well.
I have no idea when will this kind of DVD burners be available and how much this will cost.Maybe Jan might let us know.
I am sure HD DVD burners will be cheaper then any HD recorders.

September 25, 2005 at 10:47 pm in reply to: P2 HD 2/3″ CCD cameraThank You for that Simon.
Good Luck in the future and hang around as well.
I am sure Sony will next year release their version of P2.
Sony have had Memory Stick for a while now,I am sure they will introduce it in HDV first and then the rest will follow.
I bought small still camera 2 years ago.128mb memory cost me about $100.
We all know how much it is today.
Video Future will be most likely in this kind of technology, unfortunately it will be expensive for next 2 years.

[Simon Wyndham] “Urr right. And Thomsons are used by which networks?”
You should know-You live in Europe.
If not just ask Thomson, they will supply You that information.
Down Under one station is using Thomson.[Simon Wyndham] ” Do you own a Thomson ENG? What are you basing your judgement on?”
I own Thomson.I have owned 8 broadcast camcorders in past 22 years.[Simon Wyndham] “Have you used a HD XDCAM? What is your basis for comparison between P2 and XDCAM? Have you used both?”
Yes we tested XDCAM….but I guess the discussion is about HD??
Sony will try to lock users into their own format,in this case it is XDCAM HD.
Tha fact is-P2 storage is far more flexible….especially in “long term”.
My jugment is based on logic and some experience in this industry.Well Simon, since You know so much about cameras and formats, look into your “crystal ball” and explain to all of us some benefits as well disadvantages of formats we are
discussing at the moment.[Simon Wyndham] “Seriously folks, this is starting to sound like playground kids arguing over whether a Ferrari Enzo could beat a Lambo Diablo.”
You meant MG and Ferrari…….
