What, 8 point system font isn’t easy enough for you to read?! For real. Let’s get some useable TC windows.
I was talking to some FCP “gurus” at NAB and asked “Why don’t we have a TC window when we’re doing ETT or Capture? They were dumbfounded

It’s these quibbles with FCP that keep some of us onliners in business. While we have no immediate need to go to FCP 6 – these sounds like the exact same issues I deal with daily in FCP5. Field ordering problems, pulldown issues, scaling issues between formats.
from an offline POV, it’s great, you can just shove crap into a timeline and edit with it. but FCP has always been a little sloppy, IMHO, with how it deals with video technically.

There’s two *really* crappy mask tools in FCP: 4-point and 8-point. You might want to look into Silhouette FX if you want decent masking tools in FCP. Otherwise send clips to After Effects, etc….

I really doubt there’s any quick solution. I’d just have him start overcutting the camera audio with the bwav files, and you’ll probably be done long before you could force FCP to re-link to anything.

All true, but you should still strive to purchase the best monitor you can and have it calibrated as close to broadcast standards as possible. You wouldn’t want to master a studio album on the Aiwa stereo you bought at Best Buy – they’re great reference for the worst possible sound, but always master a professional level.

You know what would be better? Can FCP 6 import OMF’s yet?!

As long as your drives can pump out enough data, you’ll be fine.
The Xsan really is for implementing a lot of machines where people are reading and writing data at the same time. You need a controller machine who decides which bits of data are more important, who gets more bandwidth, etc….
Also make sure to keep your render files on the local computer, not the shared storage.

No, the drive is perfectly fine. I accidentally “initialized” it with Disk Utility. but I do love disk warrior!

Verdict: complete loss
It recovered about 60% of the files. None of which retained their “long” names…. Also because this was Avid media (*.omf) it also didn’t know what *.omf files were, and couldn’t properly define them. Without the proper names, and without any *.omf files, all we had was a large collection of aiff files, some JPEGS, and some random other junk from the drive.
if it had all been QT media, I’m sure things would have gone better; however this was a last ditch effort for anyone. The program needs to understand the signature header of every file to know what it is. A QT file always starts with the same bits of info, just like an aiff, etc…
End of day, we’ve started digitizing from scratch. The simple things cause the biggest hurdle.

Well, first scan is no good. I did a search for “Deleted Files” – and it found some 60GB of files, but nothing that matched the original drive. I think it was looking at files that WERE on the drive and HAD been deleted. So now time for a thorough scan. Luckily this software doesn’t do anything to the drive but look at what’s on it. So nothing’s been altered in any way.
I was also looking around the net and Norton Utilities 7.0 (back in 2002) mentioned it could save an “accidentally intialized disc.” well that’s exactly what I did! But Norton Utilities doesn’t seem to exist anymore….
