    Hello,

I have kind of a beginner question: Can I mask or cut out part of an image or video frame to create a simple transition? How is it done in FCP? I can’t seem to figure it out…something so simple to do in Avid (with AniMatte) and AfterEffects (masking with cut tool). Am I missing something?

Did you try to use a garbage mask? Or you could send the clips into Motion and have a lot more power there.

There’s two *really* crappy mask tools in FCP: 4-point and 8-point. You might want to look into Silhouette FX if you want decent masking tools in FCP. Otherwise send clips to After Effects, etc….

Thanks for your tips. I had hoped there was no need to leave FCP. I thought there might be a simple cut or masking tool hidden somewhere. 🙁

[bonnfox] ” I had hoped there was no need to leave FCP.”

This is the same mindset that I’ve had, but with Motion 3 coming around, I need to get over it and learn how to be effective just popping in and out of Motion quickly. It’s too good of a tool to avoid.
