  • Can 2 FCP systems share files without XSan?

This is another area that gets me confused really fast. I want to network 2 FCP systems so they can share media and project files BUT not the same files at the same time. Is this possible without the expense of XSan (or even an xRaid). Or would a cheaper solution be a Sata array to capture footage that is on a standard Gigbit network with a Sata Raid on each systems and they just copy the files over to work on each project?

File formats will be HDV and the new ProRes 422.

As long as your drives can pump out enough data, you’ll be fine.

The Xsan really is for implementing a lot of machines where people are reading and writing data at the same time. You need a controller machine who decides which bits of data are more important, who gets more bandwidth, etc….

Also make sure to keep your render files on the local computer, not the shared storage.
