In a crunch I’ve gotten full 8bit uncompressed media from the SAN over the Gigabit network in the studio. Seemed to work fine – no reports of dropped frames

That’s exactly it, I had just bought a new FW drive to make a backup with. And I initialized the wrong one. A backup is no good if the operator hits the wrong button!

Will do, about 1.5 hours left to scan the drive.

And here’s the irony: it was a drive full of Avid media for the one Avid editor we have working here. Maybe my subconscious was a little vengeful this morning?

Thanks! Already scanning it now… I immediately cursed really loud, and then turned the drive off. Shouldn’t be any reason anything got nuked.

Just goes to prove: no matter how many years you’ve been doing this, you can still royally screw things up if your aren’t paying attention.

I wouldn’t touch studio 2 with a ten foot pole for at least a month. let other’s watch their systems burn into the ground 🙂

honestly, FCP 6 doesn’t do anything spectacularly more than FCP 5. So fine by me.

May 16, 2007 at 5:09 pm in reply to: 30fps EDL, 24fps loading, and 3:2 removal!!!

Right. So we have non-Decklink systems, and if you make a custom FCP capture preset for 30fps to 24fps media, and start digitizing on the A frame, it removes 3:2 properly. So it’s a feature that FCP automatically has without Decklink software.

And I’ve switch the Decklink Preference to the wrong A frame, and FCP still removes 3:2 if you start digitizing on the A frame.

So does the Preference actually do anything or interface with FCP in any way? There’s no literature that I can find that explains it. I was hoping it was something I had missed.

It’d be a MIRACULOUS feature if you could tell FCP that A frame is always on the 00’s for a professionally telecined tape, and you could grab a piece of media at 01:00:00:03 and FCP would intelligently know that your IN point was a jitter frame and deal with it accordingly. Reverse Telecining 200 events is painfully time intensive.

May 15, 2007 at 9:19 pm in reply to: 23.98 Audio Import Bug?

I just tried a couple aiff files I have in the bin, and some let me Modify to 24fps, and other were greyed out…. huh.

Well, the zero’s will always be the same point in either counting method. So 01:02:45:00 will be the same audio in either 23.98 or 29.97. So at least you can be within a second if you’re syncing up dailies, etc….

Yea, that’s a messy situation to be in. What would be ideal is to copy your media into 3 folders on the new drive (1 folder per old media drive). And then re-connect media based on drive. So only select the clips to re-connect that were originally on drive 1, then do drive 2, then 3. We had the same situation coming from 5 FW drives to our Xsan for a huge project – but as long as you take it slow, it should all reconnect fine end-of-day.

I’m pretty sure FCP 6 is identical to FCP 5 in terms of bundled effects. It seems more of a FCP 5.5 rather than a full version upgrade.
