So we have discovered a strange problem here at our post house. The project we are having a problem with was shot with a HVX-200 at 24PN. 8 mics were recorded to a DA88 with world clock. The audio post house has provided us a CD with the tracks transferred from the DA88 to 23.98 TC.

Our client, who has with him an Intel MacBook Pro, can import one of these 23.98 WAV files in to a DVCPRO HD 24P project and have it playback at the right frame rate. When he selects his clip in the timeline and then goes to modify the timecode, he’s shown that he’s indeed at 23.98 and has options to convert it to other frame rates.

However, on all 5 of our PowerMac G5s this very same clip imports in only as 29.97. If we go to alter the TC, we are only allowed to switch between 30 and 60 FPS. All other choices are grayed out.

To further troubleshoot matters, I threw in my Intel Macbook Pro. It’s the exact same specs as the client’s, including being fully up to date with Software Update, and the same audio clip imports in only at 29.97 for me as well.

We are using the same sequence settings on all computers. All computers are using the same versions of FCP, Quicktime, etc.

We have trashed preferences, rebooted, double and triple checked Software Update, and we still cannot get it to import properly or force it to change it’s TC to match our sequence settings.

We also have had the audio post house deliver us QuickTime MOVs at 23.98 and these clips will only import at 29.97 as well.

    Does anybody have any ideas?

I just tried a couple aiff files I have in the bin, and some let me Modify to 24fps, and other were greyed out…. huh.

Well, the zero’s will always be the same point in either counting method. So 01:02:45:00 will be the same audio in either 23.98 or 29.97. So at least you can be within a second if you’re syncing up dailies, etc….
