Is the drive brand new? Have you tried say, 10bit Uncompressed media on it? What version OS/FCP are you running? Can Quicktime Player play the DVVPROHD media without hiccups?
That’s a pretty good drive. I have one myself that gets used daily, and for 10bit Uncompressed it’s been a far more economical solution than trying to add more storage to my SCSI JBOB.

curious. maybe upgrades in the latest G5 Firewire bus? Or perhaps a firmware revision to the 1500A? I think we bought the first run of them.

The 1500A exhibits the same problems as the AJA Io. It must have the whole FW bus to itself. Otherwise during playback there will be random black frames going to your NTSC. I don’t know about other DSR decks. But I know this is a problem with the 1500A. We spent two weeks calling our VAR and wracking our brains ot figure out these black frames.
The solution is, like the IO, to use a PCI Firewire card so you have 2 FW busses.

Without sepcifics this is what’d I’d reccomend:
1)you cannot have the DSR1500 and any external Firewire drives connected to the computer at the same time.
2)is the DSR1500 set to “iLink” with the video input select buttons up front?
3) make sure there isn’t a tape in the deck, it may simply not be in EE mode.

In your situation, you should simply copy the project file and open it up at home. If your media is the same, FCP will be able to reconnect with zero problems. EDL’s want to create brand new master clips for each event – and they are troublesome to reconnect to media that doesn’t “belong” to them.

You’re in for trouble. It WON’T delete unused media for your uprez. You’ll be digitizing 8 hours of media at 10bit for a :30 commercial………
luckily for me, we tend to work on projects with very few speed ramps or FCP effects (all EFX work done in Shake, etc…). So exporting and importing an EDL has been very effective for me. And in some cases I found an EDL worked MUCH better with speed changes than either XML or Media Mangler.
This is a very major oversight, IMHO. Especially since it worked in 4.5.

I am with you Sean. MM is broken in 5. It WILL not deleted unused media for you. I’ve been forced into exporting EDL’s to get my onlines done.
AND IT WORKED FINE IN 4.5 which is the infuriating part.

As fas as codecs, you’ll need to do some tests to find the best image quality vs. disk space solution. You might want to consider DVCPRO HD if you can afford the room (it’ll look great). Apple also offers some Offline RT HD codecs which are fine. You want to stay in these HD codecs if possible to make the online easier. Otherwise I would edit in DV at 24fps. . . (this does present some technical issues you have to be on top of)
As far as protocol, it’s not much different than doing a :30 spot. I prefer to log and digitize sets of takes (scene 204, takes 1-7…. scene 204A takes 1-5, etc….) and then either use markers or create timelines of just that scene will all the fat taken out. These things ultimately depend on the editor, so you should ask. Even AVID people have different approaches when there is so much media to be organized, and ways they like to keep track of hero takes, etc…
Also, just like in AVID, I recommend cutting the film in chunks of 15-20 minutes. It keeps navigation of the timeline simple, and in FCP 4.5 the longer the timeline gets, the slower the box got.
