    On our Kona SD system, as well as our Io systems, in order to digitize and have it remove the jitter frames creating 23.98 media, you have to do two things:

    1) create a capture preset that has timebase as 23.98
    2) digitize everything starting on an A frame (normally :00, :05:, :10, etc…)

    We’re actually in the process of loading feature film dailies from Digitbeta, and digitizing to 23.98 fps DVCPRO-50. Working like a charm thus far.

    So you are going to cut a version from the finished tape? You have no access to the dailies?

    This is a problem I have often when cutting reels for, say, costume designers who provide me with a DVD of their feature work. The best way to navigate the problem is to simply cut in such a way that you never use those half/half frames. Deinterlacing will lose you half resolution which will look crappy.

    Are you using an output device like a Kona or Io? This was a problem I had in earlier versions of FCP (3) with Digital Voodoo products….

    or even better, when you digitize that tape, just input from the “super” on the deck and have it do a window burn for you.

    Hm…. the easiest thing to do would be to lay off a tape (which will be 29.97… I assume you’re working on a Kona, etc. system?). Digitize that as a single chucnk, plop on the “timecode window” effect, and give that to him. Since 29.97 is an analog of 23.98, you won’t have to worry about sync drift.

    They must be on an old version of Protools. Especially since 23.98 is a totally valid HD framerate. But if I’m not mistaken, there’s something by Protools called DigiTranslator (or something like that) which will bump 23.98 to 24.0 for a session.

    We’re doing a similar project now. Cinema Tools will generate a 24fps edl from a 30fps. It’s accurate – but keep in mind that since you may have cut on 3:2 jitter frames, those won’t reflect in 24fps land. So media may be 1 frame off in HD land.

    Media Manager in FCP 5.0.2 is BROKEN. It only seems to work if you have NO speed ups and often no filters enabled. It doesn’t “delete unused media” , it gets timecodes wrong, and I’ve seen garbled up reel names as well.

    It partially worked in 4.5, but it is USELESS in FCP 5.

    I’m with you – Media Managment in FCP is precarious junk.

  • Effects -> Widescreen

    or

    Crop to match the HD stuff
