I get a lot of work with stuff that was shot on film but arrives and leaves on Digibeta. I’m concerned about editing in 29.97 because of all the LCD, plasma, etc. sets out there that are progressive-only. My understanding is if I take telecined video and edit it at 29.97, it will cause major artifacts when viewed on any non-interlaced monitor that doesn’t have expensive de-interlacing hardware built in.

I tried the Blackmagic NTSC 23.98 – JPEG Easy Setup. It seemed to work great. But when I tried batch re-capturing just the edited clips, it didn’t work out so good. I had to manually re-connect the media after capture, and when I did the pulldown order was completely off. Am I doing something wrong, or is there just no way around this?

On our Kona SD system, as well as our Io systems, in order to digitize and have it remove the jitter frames creating 23.98 media, you have to do two things:

    1) create a capture preset that has timebase as 23.98
    2) digitize everything starting on an A frame (normally :00, :05:, :10, etc…)

We’re actually in the process of loading feature film dailies from Digitbeta, and digitizing to 23.98 fps DVCPRO-50. Working like a charm thus far.

Thanks, yes capturing the initial footage worked fine. I started on 01:00:00:00, which is an A frame so that makes sense. But batch re-capturing did not work.

Probably because in your Batch capture there were in points that weren’t on an A frame. It’s kinda like a “you have to do it from the very start” sort of deal. I could NEVER get the automatic VITC Blackmagic pulldown thing to work – which, from what i understand, is supposed to let you set any In point and get proper 3:2 removal.
