I am trying to deterimine a workflow for our ProTools editing and mix. We’re mastering to HD tape and also mixing 5.1 for DVD and eventual film out potential. Right now I have a 23.98 sequence and I need to convert somehow to a version Pro Tools can handle. I also need to make a Quicktime movie that can run in sync (with accurate window burn timecode) for sound and composer. They can run at 24 or 29.97, but not 23.98. How do I make such an OMF and how do I make this quicktime – and are there any suggestions for what workflow will work?

They must be on an old version of Protools. Especially since 23.98 is a totally valid HD framerate. But if I’m not mistaken, there’s something by Protools called DigiTranslator (or something like that) which will bump 23.98 to 24.0 for a session.

Right – sound can convert our 23.98 sequence. But the composer can not – he needs it in 24 or 29.97. I don’t know how to make that happen for him with a QuickTime movie with window burn timecode that corresponds to the QuickTime timecode and not the original sequence.

Hm…. the easiest thing to do would be to lay off a tape (which will be 29.97… I assume you’re working on a Kona, etc. system?). Digitize that as a single chucnk, plop on the “timecode window” effect, and give that to him. Since 29.97 is an analog of 23.98, you won’t have to worry about sync drift.

or even better, when you digitize that tape, just input from the “super” on the deck and have it do a window burn for you.
