24p Advanced means, literally, the camera head captured 24 frames per second, but striped media onto tape at 30fps with the “advanced” pulldown pattern. So yeah, unless you told FCP to digitize and ditch those pulldown frames, you’re going to have 30fps the whole way.

If you anamorphic clips are marked “anamorphic” in the bin, when you put them in a regular 4:3 sequence, FCP will automatically letterbox them as a RT effect.

Insert tracks until you see them again, then move them down to the lower levels.

Hear ye! Hear ye! Final Cut can out-edit an Avid anyday, but Avid can WAAYYYY out manage media hands down.

Except XML’s are prone to problems too…. ever since we installed an XSAN solution, XMLS sometimes work, sometimes come out garbled, and there’s no rhyhm or reason we can fathom.
Media Manger IS slow. Dupe your sequence, delete everything but V1, and see what kind of speed you get. But chances are it’s going to take as long as it takes…. I imagine it might speed up in sections and slow down in others. Media Manager, IMHO, is a broken piece of junk…. it REALLY REALLY REALLY needs some attention from the programmers, because all we have now is cheap workarounds.

You said ‘only in analog.’ meaning have you tried a carpture of this SP tape from a Digibeta over SDI? Try to confirm if that shift is happening as it hits tape, or it is a problem in the Decklink A-D

the signal coming out of the card is NTSC, but FCP only knows about and is feeding your Decklink the 23.98 HD video. It’s an on-the-fly conversion.
Why don’t you convert your media to DVCPRO-HD? It will retain the 23.98 fps, 16×9 aspect, timecode, and can be editied off a firewire drive? Otherwise I’d convert it to regular DV or DV-50, at 23.98 fps, with a letterbox.

What kind of DV deck do you have? Does it have Timecode IN/OUT connectors on the back? Either XLR/BNC/RCA. If it does, lay your program to DV tape, and then patch the Timecode Out from the DV deck into the Right audio channel of the VHS. Bascially you’ll hear this high speed whirring sound – which is audible timecode. That’s what they’re looking for.

Since it’s happening on more than one deck…. I’d trash prefs and cache for FCP. Run the BM uninstaller and re-install those drivers. And maybe reseat your Decklink card for good measure.
