We had 2 of their Big Disk Extremes burn out on us. One had little wisps of smoke coming out 🙂 And these are drives living in a cooled machine room. We threw in the towel at that point. Maybe we got a bad batch, but that was enough down time and media we had to re-digitize that it wasn’t worth buying another one.

Lacie has been very unreliable for us. we went to G-Raid for firewire and won’t go back. More expenseive per gig, but a much better product. honestly I think Lacie’s no-fan / radiative heat design is stupid considering how hot those things get to the touch, especially for video work… G-Raid has fans in their enclosures.

So this sounds like your first film job? A best-lite is *all* the film you shot put to tape. The colorist at the dailies house runs through the film briefly, making quick adjustments to the transfer, enough so things are basically natural color and an even exposure. this is just rough picture which is intended only to get your edit done. Then you go back with an EDL to the telecine guy and spend a couple days making a beautiful color grading.

If you already have a HDCAM SR workflow, which you mentioned, go ahead and get your dailies done best-lite to SR, digitize and edit at DVCPRO-HD, and then for online you can batch capture at 4:4:4 from the SR and then get a tape-to-tape color grading, or you can go back to the 16 and get a fresh transfer from the ground up.

that’s no good…. you can try splitting up your sequnces into 15 minute reels…. but I’ve had several 1.5 hour projects in FCP 5 at uncompressed SD that worked just fine.

FCP 4.5? I had this problem often in 4.5 when the project started to exceed 1 hour.

If you’re on FCP 5.0.2, it does get sluggish from time to time, but a quick save and restart of FCP will clear it up.

Yeah, you totally could. DV-HD is about twice the storage as DV-50, but will look pretty awesome to offline. It has a higher resolution yes, but the color space is the same as DV-50. An EDL for telecine will be less complicated from a DV-100 23.98 source, yes, but nothing more than an extra day of prep on the back-end won’t solve.

We have several FCP stations which are SD only, so it makes more sense foer us to work on the edit in DV-50 (but it sounds like you’ll be on single-station editing. So it’s not a problem.) SD also makes it quicker and easier to output quicktimes, DVD’s, or viewing cassettes (less processing). Also, when you have clients in to watch the edit, it’s easier to output to a television rather than having them gather around a 23″ Apple monitor.

I’d say go for it, edit in HD. It’ll look great. Murch did it for Jarhead and seemed happy. But I personally don’t see any immediate need to offline in HD unless there’s very specific technical considerations.

    good luck

Oh, one last thing. SHOOT FILM!!!! 🙂

We argued a long time over what to shoot, and finally went to EFilm to see some HD to film scans vs. film originated…. the super 16 looked bounds better. plus those new kodak stocks, like the 500, is super kick ass with very fine grain, even pushing the heck out of it.

We are currently editing a feature shot on Super 16. We had best-lite dailies done to Digibeta, and loaded everything at 23.98 DV-50. Great for offline because the storage req. are fairly low, and it keeps bandwidth low on the XSAN. This also allows us to use SD cutting stations without HD gear…. plus you get more real time effects. HD dailies WOULD look great, but may be overkill for what you need.

We are currently planning on a telecine to HDCAM SR, or possibly a 2K DI. The only small drawback is that the EDL may be a frame off at the head or tail of the cuts, as FCP has 23.98 media with 30fps referenced timecode. I wouldn’t conform/cut the negative with 16. We’re simply going to get all the shots HD DI with jammed code… Maybe be a little more work on the backend to check all the cuts, etc…. but your neg will be cleaner and safer.

Try switch the render quality in Sequence Settings. I’ve had problems with random noise particles showing up on Best when using alpha channel graphics. Also if your graphics ARE RGB+Alpha try removing any filters in FCP you may have put on them – I’ve had FCP it all of a sudden make crap noise around the alpha edges.

Unless you’re seeing DV compression artifacting like the others suggested.
