We’ve had a rash of this problem since putting FCP on an XSAN. Sometimes you’ll be editing, and then POOF, “render file missing.” Nothing major, and it’s not predictable, but it makes you nervious as heck.

Not sure of your hardware – but try loading your tape into FCP with a DV deck that has SDI out – capture at 10bit Uncompressed. Sometimes the hardware upsampling to SDI will help smooth out the edges and get you a better key. But, end of day, there will be a lot of roto.

Lacie are terrible. We’ve had 2 of their 500Gig drives die on us – and others in this forum have also had problems with them. G-Raid makes a great product in firewire land…
But with the amount of data you seem to have, it might be worth looking into a Xsan/Xraid formatted with RAID-5 protection. Or perhaps a Huge Media Vault RAID setup.

It looks like SD spots on an HD channel have full, or at least 95% full raster. This was my scientific evaluation looking closely at where titles and text were placed in the spots 🙂
Also, regular SD channels are uprezed by my Motorola digital cable HD box to 1080i, and it appears it also put the 4:3 at full raster (with side letterbox).
So action safe really isn’t so safe anymore.

That’s true. After a couple days in the UK you kind of stop fixating on that annoying flicker. And it does have better resolution.

the 50 field refreshes per second in PAL is not quite enough to continually fool the eye that it’s a solid picture. The 60 fields/sec in NTSC help overcome that ‘flickery’ quality you get in PAL. Also, yes, shooting a progressive format (like film, or a video camera with a progressive mode) will always yield a home camcorder look – a lot of UK shows seem to be shot on regular video. Way before colorspace, I notice frames/fields first.

Try putting the card in a slower PCI slot. Like #3. When I put my SD into the 133 slot, it freaked out kinda like what you’re seeing.

Oh, yeah. If you turn on Timecode Overlays, you should see your source footage displaying a 30fps style timecode – only it will skip frames every now and then. So that way your 24p sequence still has a relationship to the tape, so you *could* batch-digitize it at a later date.
