If you are able to get a clean preview without the color curve. I would then rule out the hard drive speed.
With that ruled out my next thought would be the processor not being able to keep up. This would probably blow the budget for the short film, but I would upgrade to sony vegas pro 11 and take advantage of the gpu. But that also depends on the what gpu you have or are willing to upgrade to. I am using a gtx 560 ti and I can put on several effects in 1080 with a 32-bit project without delay in preview.
On sony creative website they show some bench marks for GPUs

Wow that is a long time. Just curious, but what is the footage format, what format are you rendering to, and what is your cpu?

Hello, what i would do is open the power point, press Save As and change from ppt to JPEG (now each slide is a JPEG in its folder).
Now, switching to Sony Vegas.
We need 2 video tracks created
track #1 move the power point JPEG slides too
track #2 move the video of the speaker tooOnce done, you should only see the power point slides covering the video of the speaker.
On the buttons for track #1 look for track motion and click it. It will bring up a window. Move that window around so you can see the preview window. Take one of the corners of the gray outlined box and scale it down to your desired size. You should see it that what you are doing is effecting you preview window. Click and hold on the inside of the gray box and move it to the desired location, while still looking at the preview. Here is a youtube video explaining this.

Could we get some detail about how this is going to be played? Say DVD, PC, or youtube?

Are you asking for Mpeg-2 details? If so this guild is good.

Hello,
So first thing i would do is check the places you want to upload
What Youtube wants
https://support.google.com/youtube/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1722171Audio Codec: AAC-LC
Channels: Stereo or Stereo + 5.1
Sample rate 96khz or 48 khz
Video Codec: H.264Progressive scan (no interlacing)
High Profile
2 consecutive B frames
Closed GOP. GOP of half the frame rate.
CABAC
Variable bitrate. No bitrate limit required, though we offer recommended bit rates below for reference
Color Space: 4.2.0These setting should work just fine for facebook as well.
Check your project setting and match them to your footage as best as possible before rendering
In the Render As tab, I would use MainConcept AVC/AAC .mp4 with Internet HD 720p.
In the customize Template i would
Set the Profile from “Main” to “High”
Deselect “Allow source to adjust frame rate”
I am guessing “Number of reference frames” means B-frames. So that set that to 2.
Select “two-pass”
As for the wanted Maximum and Average bit rates youtube does not seem very clear on. So i would leave them at there standard.Hope that helps
Goodluck
