    Hi Guys,

I am cutting a 15 min film and the problem is that I’m seeing “slow frame rates” My frame rate of the production is 29.9 and its dropping to below 10FPS on the timeline when I’m playing the footage. I am only adding a Curve Effect. No other FX are being added.

    1. DSLR footage (Canon)
    2. Two tracks of Audio
    3. Audio One is Camera Mic Audio
    4. Audio two is H4N Audio

I’ve moved the project to two external to see if the problem was the external drive, but still seeing slow frame rates.

Any ideas on what to do?

If its High Definition DSLR footage and you dont have
a real powerful system along with adding a basic filter,
its normal to get slow frame rate during playback from the
    timeline, as you are having.

If you are able to get a clean preview without the color curve. I would then rule out the hard drive speed.
With that ruled out my next thought would be the processor not being able to keep up. This would probably blow the budget for the short film, but I would upgrade to sony vegas pro 11 and take advantage of the gpu. But that also depends on the what gpu you have or are willing to upgrade to. I am using a gtx 560 ti and I can put on several effects in 1080 with a 32-bit project without delay in preview.
On sony creative website they show some bench marks for GPUs

To add to what Steve said, it also depends on what version of Vegas you are using. Vegas Pro 11.0 has GPU acceleration for timeline playback and many FX including Color Curves and Color Corrector are GPU accelerated so you will get better playback rates if you are using Vegas Pro 11.0 and a good GPU. Also make sure that your project is set to match the footage exactly. You’ll still need a pretty powerful QuadCore to playback DSLR footage. If you are not happy with the frame rates you could use a codec like CineForm to improve them.

    Hi guys,

So you are correct. I can edit a project under 5 min on my laptop with one or two corrections, and it plays fine…. Once I get into longer HDSLR footage, (my 15 min edit) the issue with slow frames manifests. I’ll look into the upgrade.

    1. What laptop is a good solution to handle DSLR and 4k playback
    2. Is Nvidia the proffered GPU board for Sony Vegas Pro

    Thanks,

    T
