OK Jonas, I spoke to Roger Andersson the owner and guru at Innobits, the creator of BitVice.
Unfortunately things are much as we all suspected, he has gone back to the day job so that he can eat! He has not developed BitVice any further and does not know whether it would run OK with the latest OS (El Capitain). He sees no reason why it shouldn’t so maybe someone could try. Personally, I think that there is every reason why it won’t, these new OS “improvements” never seem to improve anything, quite the contrary.
So there we have it. I’m sticking with OS Mountain Lion where everything I use still works but then I’m very old and not looking that far ahead!

Jack, thanks. You seem to confirm that shooting in 4K and scaling to HD doesn’t give a superior picture against the one obtained by shooting in HD. Interesting though that Media 100 does handle 4K well. That’s comforting as there is a question put by a contributor to the Facebook club of Media 100 users concerning this. I hope that she reads your post on this forum. I always import my HD footage in the ProRes 422 HQ codec, so it makes sense to use ProRes with 4K as well.

Thank you so much Jack for your very detailed reply and suggestions.
Actually, I had come to the same conclusion, it simply would not be worth the trouble shooting in 4K if I was wanting to end up with an HD file. In any case, I haven’t yet heard about anyone editing in 4K with Media 100.
In any case the newer cameras seem to be using larger sensors which, in any event, are going to result in superior visuals without having to consider 4K.

I can burn a Blu-Ray on my Toast 11, I drag in my ProRes HD .mov file and Toast encodes and burns to a connected external BD player/burner. I don’t need to ‘author’, I keep reading that word, who’s author?

No Jonas, you are not wrong,BitVice is the greatest!
I rely totally on it for encoding for my DVD’s, although of course most other people us the Adobe software, to Titanium Toast.
I have a telephone number for the main man at Innobits, I’ll try and find out what’s happening. The last time I spoke to him he sounded rather vague about the whole thing. One of the factors in my not wanting to go to the latest OS for my MacPro was that in all probability BitVice wouldn’t run on it. I don’t know how long I can carry on in this way but I’ll try.

I know that there has been no addition to this thread for a month or so but I do have a question.
I’m contemplating moving from my Sony EX 1 camera to anew Sony, the PXW-Z150, which has only one chip but it is 1”. The camera shoots in a multitude of codecs, including 4K. Media 100 can handle 4K and my question is, although I will be finishing in HD is there an advantage in acquiring in 4K and letting Media 100 re scale to HD in the timeline, over shooting and acquiring in HD as previously? I will not be needing to do any re framing or special FX, I just want the best picture quality I can get.

Yes, but Catalyst is probably a darn sight more complicated than the original Transfer that I’m still using with Mountain Lion. Even Browser put me off with all the thongs it does, all I want to do is ingest my XDCAM footage from my EX 1. Problem is, I’m looking at the possibility of going to the new Sony Z150. Big sensor, better control of DOF, huge tele possibilities, still the three proper rings on the lens. Sounds great, haven’t had a feel and look yet though, must be a snag, it’s under £4000.
