Thanks John, yes that does help in that it confirms my decision to stick with my EX 1, at least for the next production.
You’re right, it’s the bigger sensor that causes problems over lens specs. The ideal lens would be too big and heavy, certainly foe a small body like the FS5. I’ve no complaints over the pics I get, it’s just that the trend is to bigger sensors and narrow DOF.

Well Alan, I’m Mac so can’t comment on any PC tech stuff. The BPAV folders do, as you know, have to come out of your card in their entirety. I store them on a separate drive for the whole of my editing process, once a production is complete and exported I delete all my camera BPAV files, merely archiving the final ProRes file.
As to my workflow, I use, as I said, Sony Transfer (any of these similar Sony Apps will do), to convert the media to a QT.mov file. I’m not sure what happens to all the other information that’s in the BPAV, I suppose the Transfer takes care of that. So, with Transfer open and the clips from the folder visible, I select a clip, mark in and out that I want and import into my Media 100, having selected ProRes 422 HQ as my codec. On pressing import the media is rendered before import, much quicker than real time but nevertheless a bit of a pain if you’re in a hurry. Audio comes in automatically at the same time. After that, once the media is in the appropriate bins that I have prepared I close Transfer and edit in the normal way.
Others will doubtless have different workflows but this has worked for me since I’ve been shooting with the EX 1 for the last seven or eight years. Make sure that you can access and use the Transfer software though, that’s an essential link in the process.

Alan, I would have thought so yes but that is a very limited editing tool. You would probably have to convert your footage into a codec that iMovie can handle, but then I do the same with Media 100, you would need one of the Sony software applications. They started with the nice easy Sony EX Transfer, which I still use,but, as they all do, they wanted to get more complicated so we had Browser, then another which I can’t remember. The lovely Transfer is no longer available but the others probably are.

As a Sony EX user I can say that I edit on Media 100 and it works a treat. I import my XDCAM media through Sony Transfer and Media 100 converts it into my chosen codec which is ProRes 422 HQ but Media 100 lets you choose from a multiple of codecs.

See the latest Facebook Media 100 posts. They now have 172 members, I too would prefer our Media 100 matters being discussed here on The Cow but somehow the group just formed and grew. There’s been a great publicity release about Media 100 by Boris FX. They really do appear to be trying to drum up interest and, as they so eloquently explain, it is the best!

Thanks Dave for your explanation. One more question though. Re conforming old 4:3 productions to 16:9 aspect is something that I’m often having to do. Is there still a way to re adjust the centre of the frame as described by Jorge in his first post?

Thomas, I absolutely agree with all you say (I have to in order to preserve the entente cordiale!)
Could someone please tell me, following the Jorge query about software / hardware, is my system – Suite 2.1 with the AJA card – as good as the earlier one that Jorge had?

Yes Jorge, you are probably right about that. I only crop using the ‘top & side’ facility, you are wanting to do more. Others may be able to advise but I can’t think that they would have deliberately removed that function.

Jorge, although I’m not currently in from of my editing Mac with Media 100 open, I can assure you that the later versions do still allow a choice of crop, i.e. top or side or a combination of both. I have one of the Suite 2 versions and have recently been adapting some 4:3 productions to 16:9, so I know it works. The option has not disappeared.
