That’s the problem with updating! I also edit on Media 100 and I’m still on the last of the MacPro towers running Mountain Lion. I use the old Sony Transfer software to import my XDCAM footage which I also do in ProRes HQ. I don’t know how backwards compatible all the software is but there always seem to be problems with new OS versions. Could you not run Mountain Lion on your new computer?

Cornelis, I heartily endorse what Floh has said (is he not always brilliantly right?). You won’t spot any difference with the ProRes file, the engineers have done wonderfully well in designing this codec. I find that thirty minutes of HD comes in well under 50GB’s in ProRes 422 HQ. Modern drives have capacity in TB’s now so you shouldn’t have a problem.

Cornelis, you have to supply much more information before anyone can address your problem. What codec did you apply to your clip on importing to Media 100? What was the original clip before import? How have you set up your project as far as codecs are concerned?

Tom, I’m still using the very first Sony XD Transfer with my EX 1 and, as I’m only on OS Mountain Lion (10.8.6 I think), everything works fine. I didn’t want all the additional facilities provided by the later software such as Browser, I just want to ingest files from the camera cards to a computer and drives. Can you get hold of a copy of the Sony Transfer?

Ray, listen to Craig, as far as I’m concerned he’s been issuing sensible advice like this for as long as I’ve been a Cow follower, maybe 20 years.
Sony don’t want you to disturb their complicated file structure. Personally I drag and drop my complete cards to back up drives via a MacBook Pro. Most people like to use software to check and verify the file transfer. I don’t bother and have never had a problem, now I’ll get told off by Craic!

Danny, I fear that BitVice may not still be available but why not telephone the guy in Sweden that developed it with Innobits? His name is Roger Andersson and I have two numbers 004 660 667 060 and 004 670 977 8794 and there is an E Mail address at innobitsroger@fastmail.us all these details may well be out of date but are worth trying.
There are of course many other applications for encoding DVD’s but I still use BitVice as I find that the discs it has encoded are really good. Most people seem to use Media Encoder but that only comes with the Adobe Premiere Pro which I don’t use. Encore also seems to be well used.

Sorry Chris for my somewhat unhelpful reply. I rely totally on my computer supplier for all the connecting up. I find shooting and editing documentaries quite demanding enough without having to deal with the computer techy stuff!

Ever since I started with Media 100 in 1996 I’ve used two computer screens for editing, is this what you mean Chris? I certainly had this when I was using your MacG5, just as I can now with the MacPro.
Yes, that wonderful Floh Peters is still around (thank goodness), and he may well see your post, although I’m not sure how often he looks nowadays.

First of all, just set all your audio levels to ‘auto’, in case you have manually set something wrong. Also, if it’s a Sony camera, make sure that the little mic switch is set to the phantom power position, and the setting is for an external mic. I’m sure you know all this but it’s always best to start with the basics when there are problems. Craig is your man provided to give him all the technical info that he’s asking for.
