Yes but Chris, that was my point. It isn’t the XDCAM media that is the problem for you as you have the Sony Transfer, it’s the progressive video if you have the HDx board. That will not output progressive. If you have the AJA board then the problem lies elsewhere.

Yes but Noah, what if you’re giving say a DVD for playing somewhere. Do you reckon we’re better off doing a decent SD DVD and hoping it will be played in an upscaling player, there are plenty about now and not necessarily Blu-Ray? I would love to make Blu-Ray discs and the burning is easy – Toast 9 and a burner- but what about encoding? Also there are not all that many players around yet, maybe when the economic situation improves. It’s a pity, but our stuff has to end up on DVD’s now and it’s the quality that bothers me as compared to good old tape!

I have the HDx board but I can acquire progressive EX media through the Sony Transfer software but the HDx board can’t play progressive video. The only way I can see it is in the small source or record monitors. There should be no problem however with the new AJA board.

I know this might be a bit off thread but when you mentioned DVD I wondered whether you had ever used BitVice for encoding. I am now on their version 2.4 and it’s way better than the earlier versions and does a fantastic job. I take it in as an exported 1920 x 1080i timeline and the standard def DVD is good. I recently saw one of these DVD’s projected on a huge screen (not plasma) in a cinema and it looked perfect. Mind you the DVD was played in a Panny Blu-Ray player which upscales. That is the only sensible way to play SD DVD’s the player costs under £200 ($250?). Those guys in Washington were idiots, the AV people should always listen to the producer, he generally knows how to show his stuff to the best advantage.

Very often the first time that is indicated is way longer than the job will actually take and then it sees sense and adjusts. Have you waited long enough for this to happen, it generally takes a few minutes. As you will know a Self Contained export takes far longer than a By Reference anyway.

Sorry to throw a spanner into this exchange of posts but to my simple mind by far the easiest (and to many the best) editing system is Media 100. I was a film editor and found the transition fairly easy whereas Final Cut has a steeper learning curve. Media 100 will do all you require, now handles HD, HDV, XDCAM as well as, of course, DV. Now owned by Boris, their development team have been revived after a nasty experience with bad owners for a while, and they are innovating all the time. Take a look!

Sorry chum, that’s the CMOS as opposed to the good old chips. A wedding videographer I know finds it impossible to use the EX1 because the stills photographer using flash makes the video useless with the same problem that you have. There have been numerous posts on this forum about it. So far I’ve seen nothing from Sony on the subject.

Obviously all you guys are in the tough old US. I had no problem getting my firmware up date free and done in ten minutes. Surely your supplier would do that for you as a matter of course as a goodwill gesture, especially if you do a fair amount of business with them. Or is ‘goodwill’ an uncommon phrase in your part of the world? It’s quite hard enough making films and getting your head around all the rapidly advancing technology without having to put up with unhelpful manufacturers and their retailers. Here in the UK thankfully the attitude is one of friendly co operation.

Whilst we’re on the subject of ‘old’ Media 100 hardware can I ask Wickham whether he expects up grades to 13 and onwards when they come, to support the HDx Board? As he has said previously this board is magic for HD to SD downscales. I have recently conducted exhaustive tests and there is nothing to beat the quality of these downscales. The only one to equal it was from a top of the range HDCAM deck. It is correct, is it not, that downscales within the new Media 100 (AJA board) are done in software?

I am a terrific fan of Doug Jensen’s Vortex Media workshops. His EX discs go into just the right amount of detail, explain everything clearly and he obviously is an experienced cameraman and knows just what we need to know. I also go back to various chapters as when I feel the need. Great stuff!
