You refer to ‘Doug’s DVD’ and I presume you mean the Vortex Media double DVD workshop by Doug Jensen. This too became my ‘bible’ for my EX1 and I know he did one for the EX3. All your questions are clearly addressed in the workshop. The main thing that you should check first is whether you switched to full auto by mistake. Merely having the ND filter in should not cause a problem except if the light was very poor. With bright light you need the ND to ensure that the lens is open far enough to use it’s best range (wider than f8 at least). Also the workshop explains well the various focus settings and it is possible you have not interpreted this correctly. Follow Dog’s suggestions and you shouldn’t go wrong. Basically, with the switch set to auto focus, you then can over ride and be in full manual by clicking the lens barrel towards you. If then you need to follow focus in auto (you would need this for cycle racing) you just click the lens away from you and the mode is changed without you having to look down to the switch. This is how the EX1 works and I presume the EX3 is the same, if not there will soon be posts to put us right!

In my (and many other) opinion BitVice is a far better tool for creating an M2V file than Compressor, particularly their latest versions 2.4 and 2.5. Their downscaler is the key, it’s great.

Dano, I have just been filming in identical situations to yours and found that sticking with a daylight Kelvin (5600) was by far the best solution providing there is a modicum of daylight coming into the room.

Quite a problem these modern days which we didn’t have with tape acquisition. Although I don’t edit in FCP (Media 100 for me) I think that my method should work. I retain the file number as the clip name (for sub clips of the same clip it goes 1, 2, 3 etc) and for a reel number I note the shoot date. Provided you then have a note of the shoot schedule you can pretty easily refer to that date’s media provided you named your folders BPAV April 25 for example and then 1, 2, 3 etc. I suppose that can get tricky if a vast amount of stuff is being shot but that works for me.

1. I use the S X S cards that are intended for the camera, too much at risk to go for the false economy.
2. I travel with 1×16 Gb and 2×8 Gb which gives about 2 hours at top res.1
3. 1 BP-U60 battery and i BP-U30. and charger if I’m going to be near power.
4. If I’m concerned I shoot more than 2 hours I take a laptop and USB 320 Gb portable drive with card reader.
5. I don’t personally use a matte box or filters but many do.
6. If the shoot is a big one with other crew and a DOP or Director who wants to see footage then a monitor would be handy but I just review on the camera screen for immediate checking.
You will get many variations on this answer, it all depends on circumstances and what you want.

I find that the new BitVice version 2.4 is a massive improvement on earlier versions and I am, at last, getting acceptable DVD’s. I think that the secret to this is that their latest scaler is so much better.

There have been many suggestions but if you want a clear practical demonstration look at the great double DVD workshop on the EX1 by Doug Jensen of Vortex Media. It has been my ‘bible’ for a year now. He gives and exhibits his Picture Profiles which I find give a good picture.

Interesting Floh, but does this mean that a .Mov Quicktime file created from a Media 100 timeline will not be of use to a non Media 100 station without doing what you suggest?

Don, reverting to one of your mails in this thread I don’t use Clip Browser at all but still save my camera original files. I merely download the complete BPAV folder from the card into a suitably labelled folder (keeping BPAV in the title) on to an external drive. The drive has a Lindy Sata 2 card reader and this goes into a MacBook laptop straight on to the external drive. Seems OK, I have the files and they go into the Transfer for importing into my edit system in a G5. You seem to indicate that this would be wrong?
