All this makes me feel that the very best archival medium is the one that endured for 100 years – FILM.

Did you follow Michael Palmer’s suggestion and re check the ‘full auto’ button? This overrides all other focus, aperture settings.

In answer to an earlier comment following my earlier post, I am concerned with archiving finished productions rather than camera media. It’s really the same question though – tape, disc (moving), drive (moving) or static card. To archive back to, say, an S X S card in the camera (possible through SDI?) would be an expensive option at current card prices but might be the safest option, what do others think about this?

This is ludicrous, don’t Sony people read these forums? For instance the Media 100 people do regularly and we get feedback from them. This failure on the Ex’s is quite unacceptable and should be addressed publicly and repaired free of charge, there is clearly a design fault here notwithstanding the fact that additional gear has been loaded onto the camera.

Wake up Sony, great kit by and large, terrible service and PR.

You are referring to camera original files (media) right? What are you archiving finished, edited productions to? In the past I rented HDCAM decks and archived to tape (expensive and stupid) and also mastered a downscaled version to DVCAM tape. Can we record back to an EX via SDI a finished master? I guess people are archiving to drives now but how reliable are they and will they play on demand in ten years? XDCAM discs seem a good idea but at a cost.

Do I sense a real movement now as regards Media 100’s place in the post production world? People, previously disenchanted, are looking again and realising just how good Media 100 is. Well done Boris (and Wickham) keep it going and the rewards will surely come. Those of us who never lost faith are vindicated.

Whenever I had ‘field order’ problems it was because I had set Lower Field for BitVice encoding as I understood any work within Media 100 was to be set Upper Field first. However I seem to recall Floh saying that this only applies if you are in a Media 100 Codec. That is correct Floh isn’t it? What happens though if you have downscaled from Media 100 HD to Motion JPEG, what field order is required then for encoding within BitVice?

I am baffled by this thread. Surely the only thing that matters is what you produce. True you need decent kit but a show reel says more than a store full of technical wizardry and provides cast iron evidence of your skill and ability. Don’t clients want to see this evidence before hiring you?

Now now chaps, let’s be nice to one another. Michael’s right, the original question couldn’t sensibly be answered without the additional information, all perfectly reasonable.

Craig, Alister has a web site for his ‘Severe Weather Stock Footage’ company called Ingenious TV and the site is https://www.ingenioustv.com there might be footage of lightning on that but it won’t explain how they got it! Messing around with the shutter speeds must be part of the answer. There is certainly a problem with the CMOS chips and I’ve experienced banding where photo flashes were present at a shoot.
