Craig, aren’t you one of “the rich and famous EX users”?
I have now looked at the latest Philip Bloom site that you guide us to and still think that his final option is the best and is the one I use, referred to in this thread as ‘el cheapo’. Mind you I think I paid £80 here in the UK, more than anyone else has mentioned!
The poster who thought that it was too flimsy and might result in a dropped camera puzzles me. I have the special quick release adaptor and tighten everything really tight, can’t see a problem, but I’m shooting Sunday with it so better not tempt fate.

Patrick, you appear to have got involved with too many applications. I edit on Media 100 but I think the principles are similar. I transfer all files direct from the camera to a hard drive (small USB powered one if on location) through my MacBook laptop. Twelve minutes or so for the 16 Gb card, S x S. I don’t bother with Clip Browser at all (Craig knows and thoroughly disapproves). I then back up the files later to a second drive. For ingesting into Media 100 I use the Sony Transfer app to play the clips and using that interface can select in / out points of each clip for import and they go straight into whatever bin I choose to have open in Media 100. There is a slight delay for rendering to my chosen codec (currently ProRes 422 HQ) and I’m editing. One vital thing that I’m sure you know, is that when transferring BPAV files they must never be dissected and any folder that you put them in must start with the letters BPAV.

I have to say that I’m with Marcus on this one. I always prefer a printed manual and in fact when Media 100 ceased to print one some years back a friendly supplier obtained one for me from America! (I’m in the UK). Boris’s point about the convenience of having it on a laptop is valid but as Marcus explains, screens get very muddled and going to a printed page is easier than juggling a laptop.
But Marcus, you can always print out a manual, say at your office if you attend one, or even get a local print house to do it and bind it up for you. I’ve done that in the past but now prefer either the DVD’s (the one you refer to is pretty good) or have a trainer instruct you from time to time, which I do about twice a year. Well worth it as you can ask exactly what you want to ask.
If you are still watching Boris, can I add my sincere thanks for all you are doing for us editors who can’t abide FCP and who’s lives would end with the demise (unthinkable) of Media 100.

Yes thanks Craig, that’s the one. Cheapo maybe but I can’t find anything that suits me better except for the height at which you have to hold the camera.

Chris, this is EXACTLY the support I have and it’s saved my life on two documentaries which involved moving around in restricted space with no time to erect a tripod. It is light and can be attached and detached in seconds. I too have the tripod quick release add on so if tripod use is needed it takes no time at all to swop over.
Craig has a point about needing to fish it out of the bag but it’s so light it can almost be attached to one’s body if you are scared to lay it down somewhere handy, it’s not all that attractive for anyone to steal. The ‘breathing’ problem is valid with this and I’ve got blue in the face holding my breath on occasions and you can’t get the camera high enough for interviews so beware of ‘the nostril syndrome’. Philip Bloom used to demo this on his site but I haven’t checked if it’s still on. I repeat, for me it’s been a lifesaver.

I know it’s no comfort to James but as I’ve written before, I can’t understand why people do not stick to the Sony S X S cards originally made for the EX cameras. Of course price is the issue but surely that’s the wrong priority, 99% of the failures we read about are with non Sony cards. You don’t need too many S X S cards if you have sufficient hard drives to back up files, even on location if necessary.

But Craig, if we’re happy with the quality of work we’re doing with whatever current gear we use why the constant urge to upgrade? All these whiz features don’t really assist the creative aspects and I bet your stuff looks and sounds terrific, along with most of us using the EX cameras.

Same here, separate hard drives for the BPAV files. Don’t forget to transfer the complete BPAV file and name it whatever you like but start with BPAV on all of them. I suggest more than one drive, prices are down quite low now for storage and better to be safe.

I’m sure you’ll get an answer to that Andy but not from me. What I am concerned about in a similar context is how can you set centre panning on audio tracks as they are imported through XDCAM Transfer? I find it a real pain having to change the panning every time I drag a clip to the timeline. I know that this can be done for the complete audio track all at once but that’s no good if you have music at any point on that track because you probably want that to remain left/right. Any ideas anyone please?
