Might it not be sensible to shoot in HD but when importing set your codec within Media 100 to ProRes? That’s what I do with EX HD material. That way you preserve the picture quality one stage further but save lots of drive space as this codec is very efficient in that regard. Edit then in ProRes and wait as long as possible in the process before downscaling to your required SD codec. However I think you are trying to save space on the camera card? Can’t help you there I’m afraid, don’t know the camera.

Matt, sorry can’t help further since I edit on Media 100 and not Vegus as you do. I use Sony XDCAM Transfer which shows me all the clips and I view and select in/out points before importing. I’m automatically converting whatever is on the file to ProRes for editing in Media 100. Since Vegus is Sony I imagine you won’t need to convert before importing.

Are you at least able to view the footage in the camera? Presumably you know how to do this – switch over to ‘media’ and see thumbnails and play etc.
If the clips are all there you should be fine just as long as you transfer the whole BPAV folder without taking anything out at all. It is advised that we open a separate folder for each BPAV, label it whatever you like but start with the letters BPAV and put them on a drive as well as on your computer if you can for safety. Craig will say you must transfer these BPAV files using Sony Clip Browser with the checking device turned on but if you don’t have Clip Browser (I don’t use it) the files will drag and drop but, you will be told, without the checking you cannot be 100% certain that all the files have copied correctly.

Yes, that would certainly assist in cases where the white balance was off but hey, Media 100 has many advantages over FCP so we can’t grumble too much.

Ask the people who supplied you with your EX 1 to give you a copy of the DVD, mine here in the UK did just that. After all, it’s in their interests as much as yours for you to be totally happy and at ease with the camera.

I attended a Sennheiser session with a guy here in Europe last year (can’t remember where) and they are on the case. There are big problems to overcome but the guy told us that there is no great urgency for a couple of years yet. Maybe it’s more urgent elsewhere.

Shilpi, can’t speak about the other battery but I do know that when charging the Sony one you get a blinking amber light then when it reaches 80% charged the light blinks green until fully charged when you get a steady green, so it looks like yours was already at 80%.

I’m much comforted by Jim’s admission that he can’t get his head around FCP. I often feel ashamed to admit that I daren’t even try. Started NLE after years of film editing in 1996 on Media 100 and found the transition so intuitive. I’m sure that it would not have been so with any other system. Mind you the people who use FCP seem very happy and do great work but it is interesting to hear some say they still hanker after Media 100 even after they deserted it.

Adam, is the Hoodman you refer to the one with the glass magnifier in it? I have one in an effort to replicate the EX 3 hood over the screen but with a shoulder mount I can’t get my eye close enough to the Hoodman. Do you have any problems in this respect?

Peter, don’t be so ‘diplomatic’, the previous owners were reprehensible in their behaviour, both to the employees and engineers and the customers. It darn nearly killed Media 100 for ever but our patience in sticking with it and the heaven sent intervention of Boris saved the day.
I totally agree that we now have an editing tool as good as any in the world and, importantly, far easier and faster to use than FCP. I do know editors who deserted to FCP and they seem very happy and do great work but maybe they are more savvy than I am with the technicalities, I just want to produce good stuff without having to go through all the hoops learning a far more complicated system.
Thank goodness Media 100 were quick on the ball in supporting the new EX XDCAM media and this is an example of how the Boris team are keen to keep up with the game. Long may this continue and may I thank The Cow for making it possible for us to share our experiences and our problems when they (rarely) arise.
