Yes, it does take a little getting used to but I ingest into Media 100 much as with tape by using the Sony EX Transfer which gives thumbnails of each clip. I open various bins for all the categories of my documentary and just import each clip into the correct bin.
So Gino, can’t you do the same? Name your bins and make sure all the court stuff goes in a ‘court’ bin when you come to a court clip?

Jim, I follow exactly the same workflow as you outlined and have been getting very good SD DVD.s with the same version of BitVice. What bit rates are you setting? I set two passes, VBR, and an average of about 7.25 depending on the programme time. Minimum of 4.5, maximum of 8.25. I find that the downscale quality of BitVice is better than that of Media 100, especially now that we don.t have the magic HDx board.
Roger Anderson also advised that the RGB box should be checked but nothing else. There has been an issue in the past with the Media 100 colour space.
I do find that quality differs DVD to DVD, try another with these settings and see what happens. We will all be making Blu-Ray from our HD timelines within a year or two wont we?

Nick, I hope you’re still ‘on thread’ because I too had doubts about the quality of SD DVD’s from really good HD stuff.
The latest versions of BitVice solved all my problems. This encoding software (especially versions 2 onwards, the latest is 2.9.5) is stunning and the downscale first rate. Still not quite tape maybe but pretty darn good.

I too am ‘left eyed’ and find a problem with using the finders such as made by Hoodman. I shoot with the EX 1 and often have to hand hold and the SMI Brace as demonstrated by Philip Bloom on his site has saved my skin many times. This enables me to view the screen pretty close whilst keeping the camera really steady. I would like to use the Hoodman but can only do this using a tripod, otherwise I can’t get my left eye to it. Using the screen is tricky in bright sun though, even with a good shade on it. The EX 3 would seem the best bet as regards this problem but it is heavier to hold.

In the Vortex Media DVD on the EX cameras Doug Jensen does go through all the shooting options quite well. Anyone new to these cameras should view these DVD’s, saved me a huge amount of time on reading and research. Here in the UK we have good suppliers who generally will provide purchasers with the DVD.

Oh NO. Let’s just try and do decent stuff in good old 2D, that’s hard enough surely, and how awful is it to sit in a cinema wearing those darn glasses and trying to see a sharp image. Progress is not always progress.

There is a way of doing this in the menu because I recall that Craig (I think) posted how to do this. It involves pressing two buttons at once and getting up the ‘service’ section. Sorry I can’t remember exactly which buttons, maybe someone else can, Craig will eventually read this and may respond?

The best down convert I have experienced is in BitVice which is an encoding software for producing DVD’s. Since you are aiming for an SD DVD you could export your HD timeline and use BitVice for the rest of the operation. I do this all the time and with each new version of BitVice the resultant DVD’s have got better and better.
