I have no doubts personally that you would do any better than to use BitVIce for your encoding of your DVD. I use it all the time and the new version has a great downscale capability as well. I merely drag my ProRes HQ 422 QT .Mov file into BitVice and it does the rest -wonderful. It does the audio at the same time.

Hear hear. Without the wonderful Mac we’d be lost. Let’s hope they keep the big computer going, all the iphone, ipad nonsense is just a distraction but the kids love it.

There is no doubt that Blu-Ray beats DVD every time all other things being equal. However, when I’ve had stuff projected in cinemas they asked for DVD but played it through a Blu-Ray player because the modern BD players upscale DVD’s automatically. In most cases the image looked fine.

The most reliable cards for the EX 1? Sony S X S cards without a doubt, that’s why they make them. Why compromise with the one aspect of your workflow that, should it fail, can lead to disaster? I’ve never (well hardly ever) heard of problems with these cards.

Rich, I too have had some lock ups recently when I’m in Red 5 whilst doing a title on a Media 100 timeline. It happens at odd times and I can’t recall exactly what I’m doing at the time. I just force quit Red and then Media 100 and start again. Doesn’t happen much but it does happen. There must be others who get this surely?

Could be faulty kit but may be something simple like the mic settings at manual but the manual audio wheels set at near zero. Also look in the menu (Audio) and see if someone has been frigging around with the trim settings.

Although all the advice given above is perfectly valid (especially the use of expanded focus) I too have experienced ‘soft’ edges when shooting a head against a bright window. Because of the differential in exposure (you are obviously setting for the face) the window area is greatly over exposed and this gives a halo/flare effect which is unavoidable. I presume shots with the key light behind the camera gave no focus problem?

Kris, is it possible that somewhere further along your timeline there are some tracks laid which might be getting in the way and preventing you bringing in new material? I’ve sometimes had this happen when I’ve overlooked media laid further on. Just a thought. Has no expert Media 100 person offered any possibilities to you?
