I too found the lack of a decent high res finder to be the biggest drawback (only one) with this great camera.
I researched and also bought the Hoodman Loupe which converts the LCD into almost as good a finder as does the kit on the EX 3. BUT, it is a pain to fix in a hurry and it tends to move about, a more stable fitting arrangement would help enormously. If the camera is on a tripod it’s just about OK but hand holding for me doesn’t work. I’m left eyed and, unlike a previous poster, I can’t get the eye cup near enough. I use the CP-V (something like that) shoulder support and however I adjust it the camera is too far away. I have reverted to just fitting a shade over the LCD and peering at that. I’m managing to focus more accurately than I did at first with this camera but oh, how I miss the finder on my old DSR 300!
As to W/B, I agree, set them all in PP’s and find one to match your current lighting, quicker than using a card and you can see what you’re getting.

You would be amazed at the quality of your DVD from 35mm Kodachrome slides. Did you know that modern Blu-Ray players now ‘upscale’ DVD’s for playing on HD TV screens? OK, it’s not true HD but for your purpose as near as damn it. I presume that you are creating an HD programme from the scanned slides? That way you always have the option of producing Blu-Ray discs if you want to go that route.
By the way, what encoding software are you proposing to use for your DVD’s? I use BitVice which is easy to use and does a great encode. It will do a very high quality downscale from your HD material at the same time.

May I suggest that you enhance your EX experience dramatically by viewing the Vortex Media DVD on the EX cameras where Doug Jensen gives a masterly workshop, thereby saving you hours of searching and enquiry. It certainly put me on the right track in making the most of this great camera.

Danny, why does everyone always assume that all editing is done on FCP? I have found that Media 100 is by far preferable and that’s over fifteen years of video editing, but we all have our own preferences.
Interesting that you feel that BD’s look better from Compressor than Toast, have you viewed a direct comparison? I’m prepared to do whatever it takes to get the best picture and if Encore or Compressor give better quality than Toast then fine. I do though, only want a ‘play and go’ disc, nothing else, that’s what festivals want. But picture quality is paramount. I’m shooting 1920 X 1080i (PAL) on a Sony EX 1 and editing in ProRes 422 HQ and encoding from the exported QT .mov ProRes file.

Danny, why is Toast 11 Pro not a good idea for making BD’s? I use it for encoding and burning my ProRes 422 HQ QT .mov files and get great Blu-Ray picture quality. It’s true that I don’t need complicated menus etc, just basic top quality presentation discs for my documentaries, is Encore that much better for this and if so why?

OK Dave, is the quality of the scaler no better than in Suite 1 and might it be better in future versions?

Floh told me this months ago when I was having problems with colour space with DVD’s and BD’s. Even now however I’m finding that my BD’s (made with Toast 11 Pro) are rather ‘lighter’ than my DSVD’s (made with BitVice) but not so much that I can’t live with it.

Dave, following on from your post, is the downscale from HD in the latest Suite done the same way as in the earlier Suite version? Last week I had to downscale an HD timeline for mastering to tape. I opened an SD programme, dragged the HD programme over and waited for the downscale. The result was very disappointing compared to the old Media 100 downscale with the old (brilliant) HDx board. In making DVD’s from a Media 100 HD programme BitVice does a great downscale before encoding so I don’t need to use Media 100 for this.

Kevin, I do the same with Media 100. Sony Transfer straight into Media 100 in a codec of your choice, in my case Apple ProRes HQ 422. No problem.
