Jaeson, tested my slo-mo in Media 100 2.1.2 with OS 10.8.2 and it worked.

Noah, in my opinion your workflow is responsible for the disappointing result.

You shoot in HD and export your programme to a QT .mov, presumably still in HD, say ProRes? Now, to make a DVD the media needs to be downscaled as DVD’s are SD. The downscale is critical and I’ve seen some pretty poor ones. I use BitVice for my encode and that downscales at the same time, brilliantly. I don’t go to Studio Pro until I have my m2v and ac3 files (video and audio). Studio Pro does the mixing and them the resultant .img goes to Titanium Toast for burning.

If I’m keeping in HD for Blu-Ray I use Toast to encode and burn. All this software is reasonably cheap but the results are as good as anything else I see.

  • Barry, we’ve enjoyed your personal conversation, actually, it is always helpful to read a person’s thought processes since we might ourselves encounter similar problems. Actually I often transfer a BPAV folder direct to the laptop’s drive before then putting it on to an external drive, I forget that the new folder is not yet on the drive! I go right from the camera via the supplied connection, a bit laborious but I’m rarely in a hurry. Will you let us know what you discover about your Lacie drive?

Well of course you are only making SD DVD’s in BitVice, so it has to downscale from your HD ProRes which it does very well indeed. I just drag my QT .mov ProRes 422 HQ into BV and it does the encode. I’m not sure what your question is other than to check this workflow. I’m shooting PAL 1920 X 1080i at 25fps but provided you set your field correctly there should be no problems for you.

Eric, “bigger & better”? I’m sure you don’t men BD but I much prefer giving my film to someone for viewing on a DVD or BD. This urge to watch stuff on a computer is soul destroying to those that go to so much trouble creating nice looking material. Also, discs are so convenient, they’re actual, in your hand, can be played as and when on a good screen, either electronic or projected.

It’s people like Apple who seek the demise of discs, they have their own agenda but that doesn’t mean we have to follow like sheep.

  • Steve. The best Sony people I know are Top-Teks, out at Harefield, near Uxbridge. I get all my gear there and they have an excellent engineer on site, check first that he’s actually there. They also do firmware updates to EX’s as well as repairs. I’ve had water damage repaired there in the past, on a ZI which got splashed by seawater.

Thanks Jack, I see that in the Prefs and might adopt that if I meet trouble in the future. For now I seem to be getting my m2v and ac3 files OK provided I follow Michael Hanish’s advice and send them to different drives. Why did you go to 2.9.8, is it any different from 2.9.7?

  • Sorry to be a pain Ian. I’ve managed to open the app by opening various windows. I can see my BPAV folder om my drive in the left hand side of the Explorer window. However, even with Live Logging, Preview and XDCAM Station Remote all open I can’t get any response regarding the BPAV file.

I don’t edit in FCP by the way, I prefer the wonderful Media 100. That needs QT.mov files for import, will I get those when I finally figure this thing out?

  • Ian, I’ve only got a Content Browser v1_1 dmg and two ReadMe Texts, E & J. Also the darn app won’t even open anymore so I can’t tell you what I see! Content Exporter also came in, what the heck is that? Might hav to try again.

  • Ian, it comes up as a separate window after I installed the software and opened it. By the way, I’m trying to figure out the windows and how to see my clips, select and trim and import, just as we did with Transfer, it’s very different, is there a manual somewhere, can’t see it on the download.

Also Ian, just to be clear, your posts haven’t quite said that we can see clips from the BPAV folders that have been TRANSFERRED TO DRIVES. I’m sure that’s so but can you confirm that?
