I don’t think that you get any degradation by using the Media 100 codec. Personally, in common with many other editors, I edit in the ProRes 422 HQ codec. This is very efficient as regards file sizes but has only minimal effect on the picture quality. I set my project for ProRes, and, using Sony XD Transfer, import the media I choose. There is a time lag while Media 100 renders to that codec but I don’t mind that.

I do that all the time with my EX 1 which presumably works the same way. That’s the only way I ever take the media off the cards, camera lead into the USB of my MacBook an straight on to an external drive, preferably twice to different drives to make sure. I don’t have a reader at all.

Toby, I’m coming into this late I’m afraid but, as I have a successful workflow from XDCAM media, I just want to ask you why you don’t export to QT .mov in the ProRes 422 HQ codec. I do this and just drag the file into BitVice and take it from there. I’m a fan of BitVice but have found that the new Mac OS (Mountain Lion 10.8.2) makes it necessary to designate different drives (destinations) for the m2v and ac3 files.

There’s no doubt that Mountain Lion has changed the game as far as Transfer is concerned but different people find different problems. Mine is merely that I have to click on the drive, then the folder, then I get a very complicated message about all sorts of rubbish errors. I ignore this and eventually all the clips in the BPAV folder come in to the box and I’m away. After that it’s as before. I have no problem with just sticking with Transfer for importing. If you need more than that then there seem to be conflicts, with Media 100 it is suggested, which is worrying.

Well, I also noticed a difference when I went on to Mountain Lion but, although it works slightly differently, I can still use Sony Transfer to import media shot on the Sony EX on the S X S cards. I don’t use Content Browser at all, I transfer the BPAV folders straight on to drives through my MacBook Pro. The I use the old Transfer to import as ProRes into Media 100. I’m hoping to be able to continue doing this in the future, I don’t see why not.

Warren, please stop this ‘bitching’ about Media 100. I have actually had ocasion to be in contact with Boris within the last few months and as far as I can tell there is no reason for your pessimistic outlook. They are keeping abreast of current needs and fully intend to maintain what many of us consider to be the best and most user friendly editing tool available today.

Presumably you had the two ND’s filters on which should enable you to set mid range f stop. You also should have had the lens hood in place. Depending on how bright the sun was you could also increase your shutter speed which might also help with the exposure. What may have happened with your footage was that the light was so bright that your f stop had to be high, say f16, at which setting the pictures are rarely satisfactory.
Sorry if I’m giving you basic information but you don’t give us much to go on.
