Sony was doing a recall on this issue several years ago. My early EX1 started losing its lettering after one month of use. They replaced the side panel with one that has yet to wear away after 4 years.

An odd bit of timing, but I got an email from Sony a day or two ago saying that they were having a limited time offer of 25% off of “selected Sony PMW camera parts”. The problem is when you go to the linked parts page, there’s nothing there telling you which parts are “selected”. Maybe Ian can jump in here to clear this up? I’m not sure which panel you need to replace but it’s most likely the back panel with the scroll wheel which (IIRC) can be removed with 4 small screws.
