Ian, I’ve downloaded the ContentBrowser 1.1 and it says that this is a Free Trial expiring in 3 months. Does this mean that it will stop working in three months if I don’t pay? Or, is this the ‘window’ allowed by Sony to download free and it will remain operational to us after the expiry of 3 months?

Michael, you’re a genius! I designated a different external drive for the ac3 file and it worked! Whether it goes on working only time will tell, I’m a bit worried because you found that it came and went but certainly I was OK with my test.
On the subject of BitVice, I have been speaking to the owner and creator at Innobits, Roger Andersson in Sweden and he was looking for all sorts of complicated engineering reasons for the conflict with Mountain Lion. I’ll tell him about your solution. He was a bit vague about upgrades for BitVice. It is so good that as far as I’m concerned I’m happy where it is currently.

Ian, I have been trying to download the new version of ConentBrowser V 2 but they are asking for some numbers that neither I or my suppliers of my camera have. Apparently Sony are now asking for payment for this new software which of course replaces the free Transfer and Browser that came with the cameras. This is amazing, we have to have this software if working with Mountain Lion and Sony have always said that software necessary for the operation of these cameras is free on download.
Do you have any comment on this? I can always go back to OS 10.6.7 and continue using Transfer but going back is never a good idea.

I have been shooting on my EX 1 here in the UK at 1920 X 1080i at 25 fps for years. Haven’t shot progressive though. You would have to set the camera to PAL. Monitor might be a problem but I imagine most pro monitors would show both but I don’t know that.

As has been said, Zebra is a great and easy way to judge exposure. I shoot docs in a hurry and have learnt to rely on my screen but I’m always checking in auto just to see what the camera is saying and it’s rarely much different to my own eye, assisted by Zebra.
The main drawback in using auto for a shot is that if you change your framing the exposure changes and ‘hunts’ for a new one, rather like auto focus does. Don’t condemn it out of hand though, if you’re in a tight spot I’ll use anything to get the shot!

Olof, thanks for your explanation, I must seem like a dinosaur to you. The trouble is I was a film editor and the Media 100 system of bins is merely carrying on with our previous work flow. Also, speed is not important to me and I certainly don’t need to access more than one project at a time. Once a film is finished that’s it – archive the file and wipe it all off the system – one at a time is quite enough for me.
It really does seem, from what you say, that the heading on this thread is the reality. I’m upgrading this week to the latest version and that might well be it. I’ll carry on as long as it all works, my films seem to be very popular and I’m not so far, in any way inhibited in my editing with Media 100, other, younger, more ambitious editors will doubtless thrive on the wonderful new software appearing almost daily it seems.

Yes Olof, we’ve missed you. Sorry to hear your tale but I don’t quite understand your gripes. How inconvenient is it with separate files for audio and video? I thought that Media Management was one of the strong points compared to others and the speed, seems quick enough, doesn’t that largely depend on the computer in use? Transcoding media from the cards is a pain I agree but it doesn’t take long and once it’s done it’s done.
The lack of communication with Boris is a worry as we’ve all agreed. Still no word from the main man.

Marcus, I know that your question was directed at Jim but may I just give my own opinion as well?
The Media 100 interface is the nearest I’ve seen to the traditional ‘film edit’ configuration. It is clear, basic and uncluttered and we have easy direct access to our media clips, unlike many other systems. Changes to media in the timeline can be made instantly and intuitively, without having to press any keys other than the mouse. I don’t think that it is this simple or as fast in other systems.

Eric, I’ve always understood that VBR is the best way to go regardless of the space available. Encoding in BitVice for example, with VBR you get a two pass encode which should give a higher quality than the CBR one pass. This is what the development engineer at Innobits (producers of BitVice) tells me.
With VBR you have to set an average figure, with a low and a high and you are right, you don’t want your average to be much higher than seven and a half, if you want to be absolutely certain that all players will play the disc everytime.

Ian, off thread I know, but can you please confirm what the current version is with the EX 1 camera? (not the R). I was told today that you have now discontinued the EX 1’s, is that so? Is the natural upgrade the PMW 200?
