Couldn’t agree more on the colour correction! An FCP user friend of mine told me about their ‘white balance’ instant correction and I didn’t believe him! I have now got the hang of our RGB levels but it does take a lot of messing around to get it right.

Another big query is can we edit XDCAM material in Media 100? Sony are now pinning their HD future with XDCAM and the new sensational XDCAM EX and I am not sure whether Media 100 can handle it yet. David C can you please enlighten us?

David C I saw your other post (on the Media 100 forum). HDMI will be the accepted interface for HD equipment into TV’s and plasmas but who uses cameras to show media? All the new decks will also have HDMI so it will doubtless be on everything.

John, I have more or less the same set up and I also hear ‘double’ audio when digitizing through firewire and it is the ‘echo’ coming from the computer speaker. Howver low you may have the Mac volume there is an echo. Is that your problem?

July 8, 2007 at 5:33 pm in reply to: Anyone using the AVCHD video format?

Sony have just given their release conference in America for the XDCAM EX due out at the year end. I have loads of pictures and it looks based on the Z1 but ‘chunkier’ at the rear. Proper lens as we knew, bigger chips (less DOF) but looks like the same viewfinder.

The cards are said to be 25% cheaper than the Panny P2 with XDCAM performance. My big question is how do we get the video onto Media 100 HD? Floh, any ideas? Presumably there will be a reader for the files but what then?

July 3, 2007 at 9:25 am in reply to: OT: long term backup of media to hard drive

I happened to have a LaCie d2 Fire Wire Hard Drive so am storing a copy of a 29 minute film. The production is in uncompressed 1920x1080i and fits on the drive OK but I did have problems bringing it back to my Media 100. I seem to remember having to re make some mixes and titles etc. I would not like to have to rely on this drive for archiving the only master, I don’t think a LaCie would be reliable enough but in future that will have to be the archive system when we are all tapeless I imagine.

Paul, if it’s an HD programme which BitVice will be downscaling don’t forget to check the ‘upper field first’ box as well as the 16:9 one.

Yes Floh, the Panasonic HD 1400 deck will play DVCAM, but not HDCAM as you rightly say.

Supposing you only want to import some clips from a P2 card can you do that? It looks like you have to take the whole file on to your drives. I suppose you can then view the material and delete what is not needed but it seems a laborious way of acquiring media. I ask because I am interested in the proposed new XDCAM Ex which Sony have annonced which operates very much on the P2 principle but with a smaller camera and much cheaper cards.

You are being a bit un fair because I don’t think Cypher had much preparation for this and only did it for another company who were not able to be there themselves. Media 100 as you know had no official representation at the show and I think they should have although Boris himself made the effort to be there last year. I too was able to ‘play’ with the set up and found version 11.6 to be very similar to my own 11.5.1 on the old G5 with the Media 100 board but it did seem faster!

Of course Avid were spectacular, they deal with most of the main producers in the industry! Their presentation was good but I prefer the media management of Media 100, but then I am a fan and being a simple soul won’t consider using anything else!

Great show for seeing kit and meeting friends and contacts in the business.
Most impressed with the Panasonic Deck (F1400?) which has SDI in and seems to handle almost everthing, ideal for mastering HD rather than renting the huge and expensive Sony HDCAM deck.
