David C I saw your other post (on the Media 100 forum). HDMI will be the accepted interface for HD equipment into TV’s and plasmas but who uses cameras to show media? All the new decks will also have HDMI so it will doubtless be on everything.

Hi David,
We have two of the Sony HDV decks with this feature. We will use whatever technology that makes our lives easiest and gives the best performance/quality for our output.

we use hdmi out of our JVC deck and directly out of our little sony HDR-HC3 camera. Used in combination with the convergent design connect MI, its an excellent solution for digitally capturing HD from non HD-SDI capable devices. You get embedded audio too with HDMI which is a big plus. If i’m not mistaken, i believe it can carry timecode as well, but i’d have to check up on that. i know that most nle’s dont support that function anyway.

Hmm, not sure if I like this idea for edit systems untill I can be sure that the polling feature can be disabled.

As I understand it the transmitting device polls the reciever for correct licencing zones and suchlike codes and if it gets the “wrong answers” it disconnects the signal!

Nothing wrong with the idea of one plug / cable for everything though

I’m a bit ignorant about HDMI other than it’s a High-Def connection on the back of the PlayStation 3 and now the Xbox360 Elite.

All my freelance contacts use HDV cameras, mostly the Sony Z1, and run their captured footage into FCP. Although HDV isnt apparently true HD, they all act and talk as if it is, yet whenever I rent a HDV camera, I always record in normal SD MiniDV, as my old Media100i can’t accept HDV.

For all the advances Media100 software has made over the past few years, is it still the case, a programme like Producer can’t handle HDV via firewire? I’m not sure – tell me if I’m wrong. All I know is, you won’t be able to compete with the Z1 & FCP workflow until Media100 can take HDV.

I look forwards to it. ^_^.

We agree. HDV is MPEG and that is the problem for us right now. HDMI transcodes the MPEG stream before it gets to Media 100, so it’s a bit easier to implement. We’re looking at all interfaces and connections on all devices and trying to pick what’s the quickest to market and works best for our customers. The transition to Intel set our engineering efforts back 9 months and we want (and have) to catch up on features.

When we do use the Sony HDv camera we record in the HDv mode thinking that this camera will give it’s best performance in this setting. We then use the decks downconvert capabilities to feed Media100 the video of choice, 16 x 9 or 4 x 3. Two of our systems are Hidef. It also keeps our footage current with lots of options for the future, Hi-Def, 16×9, etc.
