Media 100 does not handle HDV as such (there are suggestions that they are working at it) but what I do is either let the Sony deck downconvert to DV (does a brilliant job) and then you can acqire via firewire into Media 100 or up convert your HDV material to un compressed HD through the splendid Convergent Design HD-Connect. This will then send your HD into Media 100 through SDI. There is no way that you can then master back to HDV from Media 100 direct but then do you want to? Also Media 100 does a very good downscale from HD to DV with options on aspect ratios also. Most people seem to think that it is preferable to get out of HDV for editing and post.

Yes, Ajmetz, I hope to be there but not sure which day. I will have a cell phone with me, 07801 912 700 so when you are there give a try on that. I don’t think NMR would have a Media 100 demo set up but you should contact them to find out.

I think that you will find that NMR (New Media Research) will be there who are a major Soho media editing equipment supplier and re sellers of Media 100. I think Boris himself was at the last show but I missed him.

Must just comment on Tim’s long explanation. He gets it right on the nail every time. I was a film editor, completely illiterate as far as computers were concerned (never switched one on!!). Introduced to Media 100 as the nearest thing to film editing and even I learnt it. Wonderful for what I do (documentaries, one camera), cutting to music etc. Now we have got rid of Optibase things seem to be moving forward with great support. Just one question of Tim and Ron – why is Avid’s media management so much better – I can’t imagine anything better than Media 100 in this respect? Thanks fellows for the exoert opinions, this is what makes The Cow what it is, the best!

Kieran, sometimes I discover a random arrow stuck on a timeline even when there is nothing on that section of the track. I find this impossible to remove, not that it causes any problem. In fact I can’t see why our first poster finds arrows so disturbing, don’t they always appear when media changes tracks? I am curious as to what he means by “media 100 is a different beast from Avid”. Easier to use? Better? Worse?

Floh, I am now confused following your last post which appears to contradict your earlier one. All DV material when digitized into whatever Media 100 system (i or HD) is lower field first right? All HD in the system is upper ? What if we bring in DV to mix with HD onto an HD timeline it is upper field first right?

When I am preparing to encode and burn a DVD from an HD timeline edited in Media 100 HD version 11.5.1 using BitVice I was tought to check ‘upper field first’. It is lower field if from the very start, ie. digitizing you are working with DV then lower field is correct. Anyone else commenting?

Here, here, here, here. Colour correction is not easy other than simple brightness, contrast, hue and saturation. I was told about the FCP white balance adjustor only this week by someone who was frustrated by the Media 100 system. I only have Media 100 (version 11.5.1) and as a long time devotee I love it but Oh the colour adjustments…….I know the curves and graphs probably do a lot but unless you are a trained colorist it is tricky.

I alwys set at 8bit uncompressed. I think that you have to go into Media 100 HD through SDI, firewire won’t take HD, it’s for DV, useful because early versions of Media 100 HD didn’t support firewire and there was no way to master DV to tape using the DSR 11 or 20 decks.
