I have version 11.5.1 and the Sony HVR M10 deck. I am taking the HDV footage from the deck via firewire into Convergent Design’s HD-Connect thence via SDI into Media 100 as uncompressed 1920 x 1080 HD. Seems to work fine but with the limited opportunities for HD product I then have to either conform to DV within Media 100 (a long job) or downconvert using an HDCAM deck (expensive). Let’s hope that HD DVD’s become standard very soon!

Not only the reverse! I am finding any speed change with 11.5.1 is not as good as it used to be. It is particularly bad when dealing with conformed SD from HD.

I have now found that as the production was DV from the start I should have set bottom field in BitVice rather than the top field we usually set. This seems to have been the problem.

I have been using the smaller NP-F970 7.2 volt InfoLithium batteries for some time and find them amazingly long lasting. I tend to look after them and discharge before re charging if possible much as we had to with Ni-Cads but they do seem very reliable.

February 23, 2007 at 11:54 am in reply to: PDW-F70 XDCAM HD disc direct to standard def DVD?Doesn’t the deck you mention have a downscale facility? When I master HD to the HDW-F500 I can then take off a DVCAM copy using the decks’s very good downscaler. I then can then make SD DVD’s in the normal way. Alternatavely I downscale within my editing system (Media 100, also a good downscaler). Finally, another way is to use BitVice for your DVD’s and that also contains a downscale option which I often use.

January 31, 2007 at 11:25 am in reply to: Accents in Graffiti going behind capital lettersI have had trouble in locking letters in a set position in the frame and have been shown how to keep the set position by going to the ‘position’ tab and setting either ‘hold’ or ‘constant’. I am not certain that this is what you have to do with accents but it sounds the same problem I had with ‘floating’ titles.

Since you’re talking about BitVice picture quality I would like to say what we have tried. I am editing in 8bit uncompressed HD and when making SD DVD’s have been letting BitVice do the downscale. The results were not too bad but sometimes a bit noisy, especially with movement. I was advised to try the downscale within Media 100 and to use Motion JPEG B as the compressor. This gave me a slightly better picture quality. Has anyone else done this and would Floh care to make a comment on this please?

David, what’s wrong with going with the current 11.5.1 and the Dual G5? Is the Intel set up so much better?

January 9, 2007 at 6:58 pm in reply to: What can M100 Producer output through Firewire?Sorry Floh, more confusion in my mind! Am I right in saying that an HD timeline won’t be converted to DV for mastering via firewire? Don’t I have to re conform first in order to master via firewire? Previously with HD I could master to tape vie Composite to my DSR 20 but the picture quality wasn’t brilliant.

Ben, I always export stills quite happily direct from the Media 100 Edit Suite without altering anything other than choosing the type of file (BMP, TIFF etc). They go onto a disc and print perfectly but should I be messing around with pixels if I want to do any changes in Photoshop?
