Ajmetz, you can shoot with the Z1 in HDV and edit in Media 100 if you do as I do and use the great little box from Convergent Design to convert your media to HD and then you can acquire into Media 100 straight through in one function. There is also the added advantage of not having to cope with the problems caused by the GOP system inherent in HDV.
Floh, thanks for your reply, it’s good to hear that in your (valued) opinion they will get around to dealing with the XDCAM Ex issue in tandem (hopefully) with their HDV work. I just hope it will apply to those of us still with the HDx hardware systems.

Floh, as you know I currently upgrade my HDV (Convergent Design HD-Connect) and edit in Media 100 in HD. You suggest asking Media 100 to speed up their work investigating HDV editing but what we REALLY need is them to support the new Sony XDCAM Ex media because that is the camera which will blow HDV out of the water. Are they making any progress with this do you happen to know?

Couldn’t agree more with Craig. The Ex is THE camera of this size and price. The larger chips and proper lens do it for me but we just hope that the cards get cheaper and the transfer / storage questions get worked out.

I totally agree with those that decry downloading on location. As you say shooting a doc. “as it happens” is hard enough as it is! Anyhow buying laptops and drives is probably no cheaper than buying extra cards in the end. I wonder if there will be a rental market for cards just to supply the need for emergency extras for the one shoot?

David C, I know I have been enquiring elsewhere about this but am still unclear whether you will be thinking about XDCAM for the HDx versions of Media 100 as well as the new AJA. Those of us who only recently upgraded to the Mac G5 (pre Intel) really don’t want to change again now and so far you have looked after the HDx customers quite well. By the way, anyone know how the new XDCAM Ex media differs from the XDCAM as far as ingesting into edit systems goes?

Thanks Craig for your suggestions. I can only take HD media into Media 100 through HD-SDI and their video card will handle it (does now for taking in HD from the Convergent Design HD-Connect) but I was wanting to check that what comes out of the XDCAM Ex through SDI output is video not just files from the card.
I have 4TB’s of storage and I don’t mind the real time transfer which is how I acquire video at present. Actually I don’t think that the Ex camera files are .MFX, I read somewhere that they are a ‘wrapped’ MPEG 4. As I said, my problem is that Media 100 don’t (won’t) support XDCAM but I want to stay with that system for editing and don’t want to switch to Final Cut.Too many fast changes in this business for an old man!

I want to acquire the XDCAM EX footage into my edit system (Media 100) directly from the camera through the HD-SDI output as video rather than files. Can anyone see any problem with this? I won’t want the media as files since Media 100 will not be supporting XDCAM Ex now if ever. I know the audio is embedded but will the output be video?

Keiran, you have touched on an issue that has been troubling me for quite a while since I have had to make some DVD’s from old DVCAM masters. I have been acquiring the media into my version 11 (HD) and preparing my encoding with BitVice and, thinking the media was DV, have set the field as lower. This gave a ‘juddery’ image on the DVD and I then realised I had the codec set to Media 100 rather than DV. On setting top field all was well. So it’s not just HD material that has to be top field but anything using the Media 100 setting?
