Great thread fellows from my original question, thanks.
Two points. Firstly Craig, Media 100 is reviving spectacularly under the command of Boris. I have been cutting HD on mine for 2 years now and there is nothing I want to do that I can’t (EXCEPT take in the new XDCAM Ex media!!). It so happens that I am flying from London to New York on Wednesday, can you please tell me where the HD Fair is located, I may be able to escape from my wife for a couple of hours?
And Don, I can’t see how the DSR originals would look better than Z1 originals. I filmed on the older DSR 300 (similar specs?) for some years and find that the Z1 gives better picture quality when downscaled to SD but of course with all the disadvantages as well (small chips, big DOF, poor light performance etc etc). As to downscaling I found that when making DVD’s BitVice is by far the best encoder and it does a very high class downscale HD to SD.
I may have to take media in SD down the SDI lead if I decide to go with the XDCAM Ex and want to continue editing in Media 100, like everyone is saying, when will we be exhibiting in HD?

Craig, I already posted everywhere including E Mails to the Media 100 support and sales people. I am a long time user and supporter of Media 100 and want to stay with them but they are not at all encouraging on this issue. They seem to doubt that there will be much demand!!! I explained that I (and many others including you) think that the EX is the biggest thing since sliced bread (there’s an old saying) and I am waiting with some impatience for the day they see it happening.
There is a Sony free download of software that transcodes the .MXF files into .MOV files that I can then import into Media 100 but that is through Quick Time Pro and it all seems a bit of a performance. It would though enable editing in HD which I do already by converting HDV to uncompressed HD through the excellent Convergent Design HD-Connect.

Having learnt my editing with 16mm film 30 years ago, when I started with digital video 10 years ago, I wanted an editing system that resembled my work method as closely as possible. Media 100 was exactly that. Media in easily sorted bins (just like hanging the clip on a nail into a linen lined bin!) and a timeline just like I had in the pic sync.but so much easier and faster! Also I had never even switched on a computer before and Media 100 is so intuitive I managed to learn it all reasonably easily. Cutting documentaries mostly I find I can do all I need to with Media 100 but like Sheeplove I do wish they would tell us more of what they are planning and I too am getting nervous about XDCAM Ex and whether we will be able to edit it with Media 100.
I am a huge fan of Media 100 and won’t hear a word against it but wow wasn’t our loyalty stretched with the Optibase episode!

Andy, even if they support the codec, as they surely will, I am not clear how we get from the media files on the disk (for XDCAM) and the card (for XDCAM Ex). We want video that we can put in a bin and play, right? As you say it has to be as straightforward as it is now with tape and we want to choose exactly what we want to acquire without having to take it all in and then delete what we don’t want. Anyone else with ideas, tapeless is coming faster than you think. Maybe tape still for mastering and archiving but tapeless for acquisition.

Andy, on 24th September I posted the same question (wish list) and have also mailed Media 100 direct but there is a deafening silence. Maybe they are quietly working on the matter but I am thinking about moving to the new Sony XDCAM Ex which records on a flash card but in a similar codec to XDCAM. I too want to be able to take in the media directly and easily into Media 100 HD without the process in Quick Time which is outlined in the Tutorial. Anyone out there listening?

As Floh suggested I mailed a wish list direct to customerservice.com and it came back “server unknown”. So I’ll say it here. Can we expect Media 100 to support XDCAM Ex files in the near future? This camera is going to blow HDV out of the water with bigger chips, proper lens and no moving patrs, just Express cards which will be much cheaper than the P2’s. The compression will still be MPEG2 but apparently without the disadvantages of HDV. Anyhow the camera is well covered on loads of sites now.
I know Media 100 have referred us to a free software download and a Tutorial for getting XDCAM files into Media 100 but I don’t know if this works for the new Ex files and in any case we will need to edit this media in the normal way and full support will be appreciated.Also of course, for those of us who have only recently bought the early Mac G5’s (pre intel), we need all this support and updating to work with our HDx boards.
Any word from the guys (gals also?) at Media 100 (who I worship) would be great.

Ajmetz, I know I’m not answering your question but surely it is preferable to continue with your current method because then you can record it all, not worry about fluffs, retakes, coughs etc and edit the narration properly on the timeline and make sure you are happy with the sync all in one operation. Not wishing to interfere with your editing preferences!

Now there have been quite a few posts recently on this subject because some people (me included) have complained that Media 100 won’t recognize the HDV deck through firewire. Floh however has posted that they never have had this problem. Why your trouble should be intermitent I can’t think.

Firstly what are you doing to the HDV footage? Presumably you are converting it to DV from the deck because obviously Media 100 won’t recognize it as HDV. Secondly I find that even with big drive capacity (I have 5tbs, they don’t like getting more than 80% full. There are so many settings that have to be correctly set for firewire acquiring and you have to experiment and go through them all many times sometimes to get the combination exactly right.
