I think you are using a DVD Recorder, the firewire connection on DVD recorders in an input only, used to play from a camera to the DVD recorder. Yes DVD recorders can also play DVD’s but they to not play out through the firewire port. You also cant record to a DVD Recorder from FCP through firewire you need to go through a camera or deck first.

That is why I always recommended that when you move to a new version of the OS (10.2 to 10.4 for example) that you do a complete erase and install. Sure it takes longer but it it a tom cleaner and can save headaches like the one you are having.

There is a small battery on the logic board that gives just enough power to keep the date and time sounds like it needs to be replaces.

not unless you have then backed up somewhere. Thats why I stick with apples mail, iCal & Address Book and sync then with my dot mack daily. If my computer blows up I still have them.

Cheep Mini DV tapes can can be more problematic, however the most important thing about using tapes is to ALWAYS use the same type of tape in your camera. Different tapes will use different types of tape lubricant (dry lubricant, oil based lubricant) If you are switching different types of tapes in and out of your camera then the mixing of the different types of lubricants will cause the heads in the camera to get dirty.

I always surprises me how so many people don’t know this and just grab any old tape they see in the store.

Bad ram can be the cause of a lot of strange problems. OSX is vary picky on ram I have seen ram that passes the tests that the OS still doesn’t like. Usually its because its cheep ram.

If its just for client preview I would bypass the computer and play it from your deck into a set top DVD recorder while the deck is set to show time code. Of course you will still have to make several discs but for a client preview its much faster then capturing, encoding then burning.
