When mirroring a display the computer looks at the setting of each display and must use the lower of the two screen resolutions. My guess is that your VGA display has a lower resolution then your Powerbooks built in LCD screen.

If you are trying to use a VGA screen to preview your video don’t have it set to mirrored and tell FCP to play back on the second screen.

I like to print the stock footage I get to tape and then log it into my tape catalog database. I use file maker pro for my database. You put in various info (who shot it, format, date, notes on what it is, etc etc.) Then when I want some footage of say a man riding a bike I do a search in the notes for bike or bicycle & it pulls up anything with bike from Timmy learning to ride his bike to bicycle marathon.

try trashing your FCP preferences

Export quicktime movie and make sure it is set on use current settings, this will use the same settings as your timeline.

Boot from your OS X Install disk select erase and install and away you go.

firewire drives should be fine then

what type of footage do you plan on editing, that will help determine what type of drives you need. USB2.0 is not good for any video editing though.
