[walter biscardi] “Get a nice HP Workstation with a BluRay Burner ($1,500 last year with Vista)”

Makes for a whole new advertising campaign Apple vs PC.

I can see Mr Apple and Mr PC exchanging quips still but standing on the other side of Mr Apple is a stunted Mr PC to help Mr Apple beat Mr PC…. oh the humour of it all

[Shane Ross] “Further evidence that they are becoming more and more a CONSUMER oriented company. Well, we knew this, they were from the start, but they think consumer first, then proapp second. “

Well, you go with what works. From a report on MSNBC.com: Despite the recession, Apple reported its best sales ever for a non-holiday quarter — $8.2 billion — in March.

So the consumer approach is definitely working. A healthy Apple is good for all of us really. As long as they keep rolling out new desktops and versions of Studio, I’ll be happy. If they decide to hang up all the Pro stuff, I’ll look elsewhere.

As we have said on this very forum many times. FCP is just a tool. There are many editing tools out there. If it went away tomorrow, I would investigate my options and move to something else, just like I did in 2001.

Better yet, buy an external Blu-Ray and install DoStudio on Boot Camp. Or buy another MacPro Tower and when not using it to author a DVD use it as part of a render farm. With Snow Leopard and the coming release of FCP 3 we can be assured creating a render farm is going to be stunning.

Not recommended at all. Some people do this, but it is not recommended.

Guess it kinda depends on what format video you’re doing and how you like to size your windows, doesn’t it? I mean if you want to get real about it, with either you need to be hooked up to a 52″ 1080p to really see what’s going on don’t you? Anything less is just not professional. 🙂

Not a big deal, but I’ve used both and for me the 15″ is a lot handier to carry around – editing on the airplane is infinitely easier (I fly coach, so maybe this is just my problem). But if some prefer the 17″, great. If my only editing platform were a laptop, I’d get the 17″.

The people who should be especially dismayed are Sony EX users who want to offload their ExpressCard media to a MacBook Pro, and perhaps check it in FCP. For that purpose, the 15″ is definitely the better choice simply for compactness.

The good news is that the “old” 15″ MBP’s are going to be a lot cheaper. I will definitely be looking for another one.

I am getting used to disappointment as far as upgrades to ProApps. Just out of self-respect, I wish I could agree with Walter (if something else comes along that’s better, I’ll jump). Apple is of course totally aware that the FCP crowd is, by and large, extremely loyal and supportive. After this WWDC’s non-news the loyalists are saying (and perhaps rightly so), “Wait until Snow Leopard,” but after Snow Leopard’s launch, the Apple Loyalist Party will still be hanging in there, keeping the faith that something great is just around the corner at NAB… 2012?

So, part of me would love to jump off the bandwagon NOW in favor of companies that have shown their commitment to NLE/etc. more recently. But in reality, I won’t jump until the gap between FCP and “whatever” gets really gargantuan. I didn’t switch to FCP until it became an absolute necessity. It takes too long to get back up to speed with new software, particularly when there is a whole suite of products involved.

I agree with both. If you’re doing “high end” video, chances are you’re on a MacPro anyway.
But I’ve been one to take my 15″ MacBook Pro in the field for on-set digitizing, etc.. but the FW800 is plenty fast. I never imagined hooking up a super RAID to my laptop.

At the very least Apple should make this an option. Even for me the 17″ was overkill when I have two perfectly running Edit suites. I usually offload to G-mini’s and go on the road. I have yet to use the Express Port on my 15″

Hey did you see the video editing feature on the iPhone? Why get a $1500 suite and a $5,000 camera. When you have it all in 1. Ha!

Exactly… I posted in another forum, anyone who’s been using FCP since version 1 has been through the upgrade pains, especially when FCP is released before a major OS upgrade. Bug City!!!
I’ll wait for Apple to get it right! New OS, New Quicktime, do you REALLY want and new FCS now??

I have two working systems, I’m in no rush. I can’t afford the downtime trying to figure out workarounds because QT X can’t render a dissolve properly.
