True, but it’d be nice to have it out of the box. The Cinema Display line has long needed an upgrade, and I wouldn’t be surprised if sometime before the holidays they release a new line for desktops.

I am also bummed that the new systems only support 4 GB of RAM. Hopefully this is just a statement of support instead of a true limitation of the platform. Intel’s latest mobile chipset support up to 8 GB of RAM. My new HP DV7 supports 8GB, has fireware, eSata and has a bunch of great new features. Looks like I am also going to looking in the refurb section of the Apple store.

[Chi-Ho Lee] “I’m sure you can get a mini display port to DVi adapter to connect to a tower”

Nope. Doesn’t exist. This screen is being marketed as a laptop companion – the old DVI screens are still available.

Also – I am yet to speak to anyone bothered about the glossy-only screens who has actually used one – I’d be happy for someone to prove me wrong. The screens are just too bright to be a problem, and the colours are plenty accurate. The new LED backlit ones should be even better.

And anyone moaning about not being able to use them outdoors – come on. When did you last edit outdoors. I’ve gone a whole week on work without even seeing a WINDOW.

Think that’s bad? What about Mac Pros? They haven’t been even marginally updated since January. In computer terms, isn’t 10 months the equivalent of about 10 years? I really can’t see purchasing a 10 month old computer for a brand new state-of-the-art price.

Hopefully there’s something awesome around the corner because this wait has sucked. Just gotta keep my duct tape and wd-40 near the G5 for just a little longer….

You’re still on a G5 and you’re complaining that the 8 core Mac Pro isn’t good/fast/new enough for you? Don’t mean to be rude but what exactly is an 8 Core Mac Pro tower not able to offer you?

“Don’t mean to be rude but what exactly is an 8 Core Mac Pro tower not able to offer you? ”

…the knowledge that it’s not almost a year old.

Uh oh. Have I started one of those inflammatory post wars where people gang up on me for saying it sucks there hasn’t been an update on their premiere hardware line in a year? I hope nobody mentions how long the 30″ Cinema Display has gone unupdated…uh oh…I did it again!

So the Macbook as an editing tool is just not good enough i feel. Also, the MBpro, with a cable convertor to connect the firewire 800 to the mini dv decks, and using the express slot with a Firewire/esata connection to ur external scratch disk (perhaps a portable) seems to be the only roundabout way to this. Any forseeable problems with this, using FCP ? and anyone knows if Final Cut Studio 1 or 2 will be able to function on a MBpro or MB?

Consumer product lines are not geared for professional level applications. Never have and never should. If you need the horsepower for professional level apps, get the professional level Macbook Pro (or Mac Pro). Regardless of if the consumer level products can run the apps, Apple has deliberately left them short of what the Pro apps need in order to run smoothly and efficiently. Especially when thinking on the long term. A Macbook is going to loose it’s ability to run newer versions of Pro Apps much quicker than the Macbook Pro is.

There are plenty of stories (here at the Cow as well) of those who’ve used consumer level products to run pro apps, but you’ll need to take note of the limitations that are involved. You will be crippled in some way if you decide to use a consumer computer to run professional applications.

Winston…we are NOT talking about professional level video here. We are talking CONSUMER level. People who use DV and HDV cameras with iMovie. Like my wife and kids. They don’t use FCP, but they use iMovie…and they need firewire to offload footage from the DV camera they have. Without firewire, they CANNOT offload this footage.

OH, but Firewire is dead, and firewire cameras are being phased out…right? Well, what about the people who have good working cameras and have NO NEED to upgrade to tapeless? They STILL SELL firewire DV and HDV cameras, so firewire is NOT dead.

This is as stupid as not including firewire 800 on the first MacBook Pros. Boneheaded.

[Ben Holmes] “Also – I am yet to speak to anyone bothered about the glossy-only screens who has actually used one”

I can’t stand them. If you sit in any room with windows behind, you’re screwed. ANy room with a light above and behind your heard, your screwed. The glossy screen looks a bit better, but constantly fidgeting to get the reflections off the screen drives me nuts and is not worth it in my opinion. No matter how bright the screen is you won’t be able to overcome reflection without changing the angle of you, the light or the screen.

From a manufacturing side of things, I can see why Apple would do it, this keeps it simple to manufacture one kind of screen and takes the guess work out of how many to make of each kind.
I am going to wait for a 17″ anyway to see what that has to offer. A faster speed bump will be nice. A quad core would be totally spectacular.
