They’re annoying as heck. I’ve used them in the Apple Store and could not imagine trying to actually use one for work. All I could see was myself looking back down at the screen, the surroundings behind me, the lights on the ceiling and the people walking by.
The glossy screen is terrible to work with. So you can count me as one person who is bothered by the glossy screen who has actually used them on multiple occasions.

October 20, 2008 at 5:48 pmi’m looking to get into FCP for pro editing. What can i do with a MacBook Pro in this regard, anything? Or should i just go with an iMac or a Mac pro? I have $5,000 to spend and shoot EX-1.

OF COURSE! Everything. It has all the connections you need. If you need FW400, then either get a FW400 to FW800 adapter, or get a Firewire Express34 card. The MacBook Pro is intended for editing with FCP.
MacPro would be MUCH better…but if you need mobility…and the built in Monitor. The MacPro requires that you buy a separate monitor. iMac…avoid for this.

October 21, 2008 at 2:40 pmSo the MacbkPro would run it flawlessly, FCP i’m talking about.
I have the money for the MacPro but the idea of mobility intrigues me. I assume i would have to get an external FW HD and use that for vid. Where would the desktop Pro version exceed the laptop Pro version? Rendering speed? What else? Isn’t there an issue with graphics card>

Don’t knock the iMac’s. I’ve cut feature-length projects on a few and had an easier time than on some G5’s I’ve worked on. You just have to be half-smart with maintaining a healthy system. I know a lot of people aren’t and should probably avoid iMac’s.
I really detest the newer ones with glossy screens, though. They’re really ugly and hard on my eyes.

Not sure if you’ll be reading this post but you’ll be pleased to know that I broke down and got a mac pro this weekend. Just couldn’t wait anymore! Please feel free to lambast me for my smart-alecky response earlier :-).

“Ha -no sweat. It’s a great machine – lots of horse power to plow thru any format. Make sure to stuff enough RAM in there.
Have fun with it!
