[Joel Peregrine] “Can only hope in my dreams that the 17″ will have four cores…”

    Good luck with that 🙂

This was a major disappointment for me. It seems to be giving more evidence for the conspirators who claim Apple is moving to all consumer. I am not sure I would even call it a Macbook Pro any more.

[Bobby Miller] “They got rid of FW 400.”

No big deal. FW800 is backwards compatible, just get a FW800 to FW400 cable.

[Bobby Miller] “And there’s no matte option.”

Again not that big a deal with such a bright screen…

You don’t mention the new GPU’s, which should help with color and Aperture, or the fact that you can spec up to a 2.8GHZ machine which sounds like a pretty nice mobile edit suite to me…

    What were you expecting?

I’ve never seen a four-pin FW400 to FW800 cable. Maybe there is such an animal. Hate have change-over connector cables hanging off a machine. Too much can go wrong.

The problem isn’t the brightness of the screen, it’s its reflectivity, which is ridiculously high. Basically you’re watching yourself composited on the image in the screen, and any other highlights in the room are hot spot blobs on your image.

Yes, you have two options to run graphics on the new MBP. The new graphics chip is not much better than the old one and sucks 25% more power when you turn it on. Oh, and you have to log out to switch between graphics options. The top end speed bump also cuts the battery life and really isn’t much of a kick up from the current 2.4 model.

Also hate the black keyboard, really hard to work with in dimly lit areas when the backlight isn’t coming on. Curious how well the backlit keyboard works with black keys too.

    All the best,

    Tom

I can’t say I agree with you on this one. I have a few FW800 to 400 cables here and I’ve never had a problem, you can’t avoid running some kind of cable from the machine to the deck/drive. Not to mention the all the other converter cables I use every day without any problems – Phono to BNC, Phono to XLR, s-video to SCART, ect

I didn’t mean just a 400 to 800 cable. I was concerned with running a 4-pin 400 to 6-pin 400 connected to a 400 to 800 connector with a turnaround between the two, but I guess it’s not a problem now that I see there is such a thing as a 4-pin FW400 to a 9-pin FW800 cable. I guess the cable guys are going to make bunches on that.

The only thing I’m bummed about is that the display is built for use with the MacBooks and not for desktops. I’d love to get my hands on that for my desktop!

    Winston,

I’m sure you can get a mini display port to DVi adapter to connect to a tower.
