April 30, 2005 at 6:32 pm in reply to: Anyone want mixed formats in the same timeline badly? More than multicam?I do 1 show a month 44 min (1hr) for one of those great cable networks, anyway i do it all on FCP4.5 and use MM to create a decompose and a new sequence to hi rez. so far I have done 7 shows and all seven have been awesome with the MM. I have video, jpegs, QT’s, speed changes, and a slew of other effects and media combinations and when I use the MM to online it works great. at first i had a few roubles and then i learned how to use it and presto magic it works everytime. to tell ya the truth i think it works better than the media tool in avid, and i had used an avid for many years.

April 29, 2005 at 9:14 pm in reply to: Apple screws us once again QT7 is not better than QT6._Protrue you are correct, but a lot of people thought that if you were using FCP HD, your QT pro # would work for the QT7pro version at least in FCP HD.

April 29, 2005 at 9:12 pm in reply to: Apple screws us once again QT7 is not better than QT6._Prook, here it is again, In tiger you only get QT7, no pro features just normal QT features, so i called mac we have FCP support 24/7/365 and i said hey i have tiger here but it only has QT7, not the pro version and FCP likes the pro version. they said yes this is true, if you want QT7pro buy it for 29.99 or wait for FCP5. now the apple tech guy said if you use any pro features in your work such as looping or creating audio channels different from A1/A2 or any other pro fearture from QT6.5 you need to have QT7pro. QT7 is not a pro version. Here’s what he sent me:
Astounding New Codec
And as a powerful application ideal for creating high-quality audio and video content, “QuickTime 7 Pro” lets you create H.264 video, capture audio and video, create multi-channel audio and export multiple files as you continue to playback or edit video. Powerful and easy to use, it -

I said does QT7 at least look better the QT6.5 pro they said NO, because your not getting the new codec unless you buy the QT7pro. with the H.264 QT7PRO update all is awesome but with QT7 regular it’s ok.

if you take your sequence and use the make clips indepenent you get all of your clips as if you were decopsing in an avid, oh and just to give you a heads up on the speed change worries, avid screws up the speed changes in the decomps from time to time also. your best rule of thumb is this, name or mark your effects with tabs and save them in a effects bin. remove them before you do the decomp and when your done add them back. it doesnt take much time at all, how many speed effects could you have.

I couldnt agree more, and i cut on an adrenaline a few times a month. I use FCP as much as i can, i am kinda famous for insisting on FCP out here in LA. Many a fights I have had over this, however from time to time i loose the battle and have to cut on an adrenaline ( i would rather it be a mac composser maybe i wouldnt fight so much). First off I hate PC based anything, and adreanline is not only a really bad product it’s based on a really bad platform, the PC. just for all of you out there who may have to fight the big fight, heres what i always tell those old out of touch producers and havent had a job in years directors, I can do this my way and you will look like a god, or we can do this your way and you wont work in hollywood again. so if you hear this in the hollowed halls of an LA editorial house stop in and say hello.

if i had it i would have, use your brain, and if you not going to answer correct dont answer at all.

QT7 is freakin amazing, bottom line. It will open up so many new doors they wont be able to build houses fast enough. when the new FCP comes out if your stay on 4.5 you better get your head checked. the reason why they are doing a new FCP, a new motion and new shake, a new DVD studio and a whole new OS is because of QT7. I saw a demo of it not so long ago, just a simple dvd thing and let me tell you i was speachless, and I can talk crap about any program. now granted some people wont have cash to buy the new FCP and other new program updates, so untill that point dont buy tiger, stay where you are and do what you do. no one is holding your hand to the fire and saying buy this or else, but if you are a tech head and stay current, to ever look back at QT6 or what ever number under QT7 is like talking about your first car hopefully your still not driving it.

April 17, 2005 at 7:10 am in reply to: Adrenaline HD vs. FCP – Don’t want advice, just comparisonsI work on both every day, here’s my +/- list for both,
avid + fast render time, thats about the only plus it has for me.
avid – it crashes a lot, it has a tendency to dump all your media (adrenaline thing), it’s still the same old interface and the same old edit tool (nothing new), if you loose something it can be a mess finding it (thats a PC thing really), has slow responce time (you can do something and it’s like the computer has to catch up) and the most important you are a slave to avid. avid is very expensive, to be honest I believe in a few years they will be all but dead. avid over all is a very clunky edit tool, it’s years behind the times, they did the adrenaline / DV thing to stay with FCP, but the AHD is like 30 – 40 grand with the HD box, for me adrenaline HD today is not a wise investment in a changing world, a year ago ok but not now.
FCP + is that it’s more of a graphic tool than a stand alone edit, anything you can do on an avid can be done multiple ways in FCP, with motion and shake and livetype if you can work them all or at least some makes this system a killer. we have an Xraid for the 4 FCP’s and they scream, (on avid we have 6 on unity and we are still trying to recoupe the cash for it). FCP is much smoother over all, granted if you learn FCP correctly (many people are not well versed on FCP) you are deadly. more people are using FCP, at least in LA they are so that must say something.
FCP – there are a few, the media management tool it sucks. avid kills them here. and the renders not staying around when you do some simple track movement is a real pain. maybe they will address some of this stuff in 5, but over all for my money and time FCP is the way to go.
in the 2 years we have had both systems the avid has been seeing less and less work. we charge the same for both systems, fcp is new and exciting and more creative people are jumping on it.
What are you doing with either system, commercials, features, TV sitcoms, reality show, web stuff? I do commercials, and now and again a music video, but if you have ever worked in a commercial editorial house you will know there is no BS, it’s all about being creative and billing. and these days FCP is out billing and out creating avid, in my place that is.
