i read all your problems/issues, and dude it was all how you or who ever shot the interviews, you ever watch VH1-I love the 70’s,80’s or 90’s or any MTV/VH1 interview driven show, all done on mini DV cameras, all green screen and all done in a real big hurry, and it all looks pretty dam good, I know cause I do a lot of the work for those shows. so think about your problem from where it all started, your lighting. do you know how to light for green screen, from what i have read it’s a no.
You light for the screen first, then you have to separate you talent from the screen by a few feet 3 to be correct, and then you light for the talent, and then you have to average the 2. thats how you get really good green /blue screen. the 4:1:1 in mini dv does not really put the kabash on your green screen. you could have also tried cutting out the talent and droppinging it on a new screen (screen replacement), also just a little note, you dont need chroma green or blue screen to pull a key, it could be purple or a deep blue all it needs to be is light even, green screen is a hard key, for some crazy reason eveyone thinks you need green for video, not true.
well hope it all worked in the end.

June 26, 2005 at 2:50 am in reply to: Edit Suite changing from Avid Media Composer 1000 to FCP 5not unles you buy the autoduck, it’s a software program that can do what your asking, it cost a few hundered bucks but can be well worth it, either that or you need to recapture all your stuff. see avid uses there way out of date codec, FCP uses the new H.264 QT codec which i have to say has an amazing picture.

I read these post and really wonder if you understand how multi cam is shot correctly. What you need is a TC source and that feeds the cameras, this TC source is usually time of day and it never get turned off untill you are all done shooting, then you just select the clips you want grouped and group by time code source and they all group up, if you have a break it just stops that camera track where it breaks, and picks up where it stars if you have the clip selected in your grouping. I really dont get all the misunderstanding, we do shows for MTV that are multcam everyday, we use to use avid because FCP didnt have MC, and now all we use is FCP, and have no problems as long as you have a TC source, do not use the cameras TC or clock time it lags and jumps you need an external TC source feeding all the cameras and we do it wireless and have no problems, so far and i am cutting show 6 of 10 and all is sweet on FCP w/MC.

dv is dv, it’s not 8 bit, so how do you think you can add info to something that doesnt have it to start with? do you get what I am saying. you can copy your dv tape to a beta and dig the beta but it’s still dv.

I have to use both just about everyday, I do have to say I love FCP, not only for its price but because anything you can do on an avid you can do it 3 way on FCP. avid hasent changed much in many years, actually it’s become more cumbersome in the last years and still major dollars, fcp makes stuff so easy it’s scarry and it’s fairly inexpensive, give it a real good look cause many people are switching to it.

Ok so I havent started anything yet but what your saying is, when I start the show which will be on an MC vers12 select 24p as the project setting or what ever it’s called (i have not seen one done yet) and as far as the multi cam stuff just select the clips I want to group and just select group clips. we are brining it in component because I have to lift the blacks for the color correct, but otherwise every thing is the same.

I would look into the g tech drives, I have a few 320’s and they are amazing, lacie drive have had many troubles and there not rated for video this I was told from a lacie tech person when I mailed a set of new drives to them that crapped out after 1 week. But yes a raid or a scsi set up will work much better.

June 4, 2005 at 7:52 pm in reply to: From a business point of view, can I justify the purchase of an Avid adrenaline instead of an FCP system? Discussionok, havent read any of the other posts, but heres what happened to me. i had 4 avids then we needed 2 more total of 6 for a TV series. now not my choice for the avids, but we were 2 months into the show and all hell broke loose, not gonna even talk about it. but for the cost of those machines you think they would run. so being the genius I am, i went home and got my system, at the time it was a FCP4 w/dual 1 gig w/a scsi external array. ok now wanna talk about saving the day never mind the whole series, ok so by the end of the week the producers (there pretty famous) dumped all the avids, we had FCP 4.5 with X serves and Xraids in 2 days. now they delay was not a big deal cause we’re a sitcom and we were 2 shows ahead, so on the 4th show we were all FCP and now you cant believe how many shows saw our set up and are now using it. so here’s my advice, unless you are richer than Bill Gates and dont care about your future buy an avid adrenaline, if dont have his money and need to think about your career spend what you need and buy the FCP. we used the digital film tree guys for our setup, they are great.
