Edit Suite changing from Avid Media Composer 1000 to FCP 5
Posted by Csharp on June 25, 2005 at 11:49 pmCan we take our media files from our Avid SCSI drives and transfer them to our new FCP SCSI drives?
The files include clips, sequences and effects. Also, Our reporters have logged clips into bins using Avid Media Log v.10.0. Can we transfer these bins into FCP 5?

June 26, 2005 at 2:50 amnot unles you buy the autoduck, it’s a software program that can do what your asking, it cost a few hundered bucks but can be well worth it, either that or you need to recapture all your stuff. see avid uses there way out of date codec, FCP uses the new H.264 QT codec which i have to say has an amazing picture.

June 26, 2005 at 7:34 pmWhat about Avid media Log info?
These are just labelled clips w/ timecode information. Is there something similar to an EDL that will allow us to transfer this information?

You can move the media if you export it from the Avid files. Ange’s comment about H.264 is totally irrelevent (no offense) to what you want to do. Your Avid media is wrapped in an .OMF file wrapper which has to be converted to a QT file in order for FCP to deal with it. This could be done as a batch export from Avid, though the time to do it might not be worth it. You would have to get it into a codec FCP will be happy with in order to play in RT in FCP. For example, if you an now on a Mac Avid you may have more QT options than with a PC Avid. Because of this you might be stuck with 8-bit uncompressed instead of DV or DVCPRO 50. You’ll have to experiment. The best bet may still be to recapture your clips.
Complete sequences are best moved using Automatic Duck or possibly an EDL. However, if you only want the edited story and don’t need handles, then output to tape or do a mixdown and export that.
