I dont know if you guys have tried opening a .MXF File lately but I can open them in Quicktime and Transcode them to 720p24 whatever they are, absolutely the same way Final Cut Will just not all the tools you need to adjust metadata upon injest, and all the great stuff you need to organize your mess of P2 clips.

I looked in my Library/Quicktime/ folder and I have a file called MXFimporter.component that P2CMS installed for me. Never have I been able to see MXF in preview… FCP6 does not install it. Panasonic gives it to you!!

I hadn’t noticed until a week ago when I was backing up my laptop’s codecs, then I tried opening a .MXF in Quicktime and what do ya know? I can export too?!

Seriously try P2CMS, free from Panasonic and then try a .MXF in Quicktime. You dont even have to use the program… just the codec, right click on a MXF and open in Quicktime, then get info and change them all for good!! Export too!

To make legal back ups, insert one of your disks, open disk utility.
Select the disk you want to create an image from. You have to make an image to burn an image .or have two DVD drives hooked up.
Any way select the disk you are imaging in disk utility(on the left)
after selected click New image at the top of the disk util window. Then name it and set a destination. use compressed, and hit ok.

When it is done, it will take an hour tops, when done drag the image back into disk util at the bottom left, then select your new image and then hit the burn disc at the top of the window, I am not sure but I think some disks of the Final cut studio are dual layer discs, you may need to buy Dual layer disks and then burn, I usually make images and leave them on the HDD and then move it to a External, so then you just mount the image to the desktop instead of looking for discs to put in.
You can actually mount all your disc images and install the entire studio without ever putting in a disc!

Yes you may not believe me but If you change the value of your scene files Frame rate on the SD card while in your computer you can achieve all even frame rates from 2-60 with exception of 25fps The frame rate actually comes up in the scene file as 4fps and you visually see the effect if you are shooting 24PN.
I am just curious, I have several sucessful time lapses and other no shutter effects Ive tried with the scene files. If you’d like to see I can upload my settings when I get to the camera again in a couple of days. Or read this from dvxuser forums:

    https://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?p=543128

I would paste instructions but I’m afraid It could not go over well with the admin here.

  • Ya know having the clips in the root of the bin did it! I would have never figured, But when it is bins it won’t convert
Thanks I appreciate all of you guys help.

  • Shane, I apologize for my gruffness this issue is really frustrating me

  • Maybe you dont understand… I’m not an Idiot. I would not be here at Creative Cow for Pro’s if I didn’t know what Frame rate I was trying to convert. The problem is : It does not matter what clip I choose it will choose one for me and tell me It can’t convert it, I know this program very well. My original post has all the info for this issue. I am ONLY trying to convert Panasonic Varicam 59.94 footage to 23.98, and the FRC gives me an error saying I can’t convert the clip, the error message says a completely different clip than I selected. Basically I only shoot 24PN with the P2 at various frame rates. The Varicam is also various footage at 24,36,48 and Aerials at 60. When I remove the P2 footage from the project it will let me convert, Before i used the P2, in previous Varicam projects this has never been a problem, I could convert all day. Keep in mind I am not in any way trying to convert anything shot on P2. It’s done on the fly, so why? What is odd is that I select a 59.94 clip and then It gives me an error like I selected A P2 clip at 24P. go ahead try it yourself, you’ll see. this is a brand new OS and install of everything. I even have tried three different computers with fresh projects and varying versions of Final Cut. There is something wrong with the P2 footage.

Here’s what I suppose, what if I change all the clips, outside Final Cut, to straight Quicktime? And then I import and work with them ? so they only open in Quicktime?

  • Of course I know there is an Update, But not for this issue, I have been working with this problem for a month now. Like Noah said, the only thing I can do is create Varicam only projects and import the clips into a P2 project or bring them both in after converting is done. But it is really annoying,

  • That is what I had to do. There isn’t any other way. I assume there is an embed within the Metadata of the P2 clips, creating this 24PN information within the project. Whether I try to convert a P2 clip or a Varicam Clip it gives me an error saying I cannot convert (0009HX) it is not 59.94 media. When trust me I would never try to convert a clip that is Natively a correct frame rate Shot at 60@ 24PN. Neither am I even selecting that clip to convert. Regardless of the clip I select it says I cannot convert the same clip every error (0009HX). I remove that clip from the project and it randomly chooses another clip to tell me it can’t convert. Maybe there is a fix in 5.1, I havn’t tried it at home yet on the X86.
